Chapter 21

—

A Study in Redd

“How—” began Jasper, but realized it was about the most useless question he could ask. They were in a dream; the “how” of it all hardly mattered. “What—” But that wasn’t it either. “Where’s the other one?”

The Spider lifted two of his eight legs in a nonchalant shrug. “Hard to say. You know how Zahir is. Probably wandered off into the web of memories. That’s where he usually goes when we’re asleep.”

“Naturally,” agreed Jasper through gritted teeth. Of course. Somehow, against all odds, Crimson had managed to lose himself in his own dream and thus overcomplicate what should have been a simple scheme. Jasper doubled over, straining to unstring his feet, but with gravity fighting against him, he couldn’t make it and ended up tick-tocking back and forth. He folded his arms over his chest and frowned at the Spider. “A little help?”

The Spider stopped the swaying with an outstretched leg. Then, maneuvering so his other six turned him upright and supported him, offered the last like a hand.

Jasper stared at it, hesitant. His tarsal claws were very sharp, hook shaped and nested in a patch of softer red and black spines, almost like a paw. Before he could convince himself to take it, the appendage began to withdraw, and the Spider shrank away, pulling his legs in around his abdomen, making himself small. “I don’t mean to frighten you.”

Jasper didn’t reply. The Spider was a frightening sight, of course, with curved chelicerae and huge, unblinking eyes, but logically he knew he wasn’t dangerous. At least, not to Jasper himself. It wasn’t his appearance that was throwing him off; he and the Spider had been close before.

It was just…

With a rapid clicking sound of clear distress, the Spider scampered upward and out of sight.

“Wait! I’m sorry. Don’t leave me!” But he was already gone. Jasper squeezed his eyes shut, fighting panic back, but before he could win or lose the fight, the noose around his legs came loose.

And he fell again.
