SUSPICIOUS MINDS

LEIGH

* * *

I came out of the Virtual Realm and was greeted with loud applause from Eric and staff members who’d monitored the session.

Confusion filled me.

“You conjured Mr. Grey. That is a huge step forward, Leigh.” Eric beamed.

I nodded, but it didn’t feel as if it was I who conjured the cat. I went over a monitor to look at the data. Had there been any fluctuations when Mr. Grey showed up?

“I told you a break would be good for you. Sometimes a bit of time is all it takes. I’m sure next time we’ll see more than just the cat.”

I scrolled through the data. I leaned closer to the monitor. Small fluctuations that seemed to confirm it had been me. But I felt that it had nothing to do with me. I had thought of Mr. Grey, yes, but I had been focused on finding an exit—not on making him appear.

There was no evidence to back up my new theory—that Mr. Grey was hiding out in the Virtual Realm.

“Leigh, this is good news,” Eric said.

“Yeah, yeah.” I failed to inject enthusiasm in my voice.

“What is it?”

I shook my head. “I don’t know. Maybe I spent time too long away and now I’m suffering from side effects.”

He clapped my shoulder. “You’ll get back in the swing of it soon.”

I left and had a quick supper. I was so caught up in my thoughts that later, I couldn’t remember what I ate.

Where was Mr. Grey? Did he know something? Maybe he wanted to show me something? Was he trying to tell me he wanted me to see through his eyes? In the past, we always went to him when we needed to see through his eyes.

What if—stop it, Leigh.

Once my plate was empty, I deposited it into the cleanup area and went to my room.

The next morning, Eric called me to the Virtual Quarters. “I think you should go back in. You’re refreshed, your energy is at its highest, and we should seize the day.”

“Carpe diem?” I raised an eyebrow.

Eric laughed. “Carpe diem.”

“Okay,” I said.

Getting in was easier this time, but I felt a bit dizzy. I only experienced dizziness when there was someone else in the Virtual Realm with me. It meant my theory was right, and Mr. Grey was here. I hadn’t picked up on the dizziness yesterday, because everything had been out of tune.

“Finally,” said a deep, husky voice.

I jumped. I noticed his tail first.

“Do you have any food? I’m starving.”

“No, no food here. What are you doing here? How are you talking to me? You’ve never done that before.” The words tumble out in a rush.

“Because I’ve never needed to talk to you before, Lover Boy. I need food ASAP. Either you conjure some for me, or you go get me some. There is nothing to catch in here, absolutely nothing. And whatever you do, don’t go out through the front door.”

“Front door? There is no front door. What are you—”

He touched my head with his paw.
