18 - Saving the Djinn

Just as I get to the door my phone rings.

I go back and pick up my phone. It’s Selene. I sit down on top of the clothes on the chair.

I answer quietly, “Hello, sweetheart. How are you doing?”

“Jack! I’m so glad I caught you! I … I…” Selene pauses for a moment and sighs. “Jack, I’m worried about you. I’m worried you’ll be hurt or die without me telling you that I love you. I love you so much! You’ve been so patient with me, and I treasure that. I treasure the two times we’ve made love and the hours you’ve spent holding me. I want a lifetime of that, Jack. I have been holding back, trying to figure out who I am. Please, when you return, take a bite and make me yours.”

I relish the love she is sending to me. “Selene, I love you too! If you’re ready to take a bite, I will give you one, too.”

She gasps. “Jack, I thought you would take me as a concubine.”

I ask the question, “What about Cholley? Is he going to be okay?”

She giggles, “Jack, Cholley has been like a father to me. I never had a father. He has a daughter that’s only a couple of years younger than me. If we do the walk-down-the-aisle thing, Cholley will be the one to give me away. I love him like a father. You’re the one that makes me moist when I think of you and wet when you look at me.”

I chuckle, “Honey, I will be happy to have you as my wife. I proposed to Eileen on the plane here, so you will be wife eight. Is that okay?”

She sighs, “Jack, marry everyone else first. I don’t care. The mere thought of being one of your wives is enough for me. It’s more than I ever dreamed of.”

“I will propose to you in front of the entire family when we all get together,” I tell her.

“Thank you, Jack! I love you so much!” she exclaims.

“I love you too, sweetie! I need to go, Selene. I need to go save the Djinn race!”

Selene laughs. I stay on the line to listen. Even though she has been much happier since she joined the family, it’s still relatively rare. I revel in her joy.

Eventually Selene says, “Make me number nine, Jack. I really don’t mind. Bring them all home, so we can get married and make lots of babies!”

I tell her, “I love your laughter, Selene. I love you!”

She laughs some more. “I never had a reason to laugh until I met you, Jack. I’ll see you soon, Fiancé! I love you, too!” She disconnects with a chuckle.

Trina wraps me in a hug as I put my phone on the chest of drawers. I capture her in my embrace. Trina says, “I can’t believe how she’s changed. You and Cholley have changed her worldview. I’m happy she worked up the courage to tell you. She’s been seriously afraid you would reject her.
