CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR
Netta sat back, hands over her belly. âNo idea I could eat that much, but it was utterly delicious, Martha. Thank you, and once again, Iâm sorry for causing so much worry. I canât explain what happened.â
Martha ducked her head. âAll that matters is youâre back safe and sound. But no more wandering off on your own in future, my heart canât take the strain, Milady.â
âTell us about the town, Vert. What were the people like?â Netta asked.
âA small town, neat and prosperous. Not quite self-sufficient, but they trade what they make or grow for things they canât produce themselves. The general store does steady business, buyers and sellers look happy with their trades, which speaks for the ownerâs integrity.â
âDid you tell them about us?â Netta asked. âDo they seem friendly?â
âI chatted with a few families,â Vert said. âI confess, I found myself unsure of the correct term, so I referred to you all as my brethren. The women in particular were keen to invite us all over. Theyâre very social, offering to help with whatever we needed. The menâs focus was different. Once theyâd established we didnât intend to dam the river, they relaxed. A couple went out of their way to warn me about rockfalls. Said thereâd been one recently, so big they felt it on the outlying farmsteads. Theyâd been out to inspect it, they told me, in case it blocked the river. They told me to be careful where we build, because a rockfall like that could crush a house.â
âWas the store well stocked?â Martha asked. âIâd like to lay in supplies before winter. We can trade some of the looted luxuries.â She twisted her hands together. âSome of the littlies recognise things from their homes, but weâve agreed, thereâs no room for sentimentality.â
âI knew youâd ask, so I got a copy of last yearâs catalogue. Make a list of everything you want, then weâll go through it together, to decide whatâs absolutely necessary, what would be useful and things weâd like but could manage without.â Vert scrabbled inside his satchel and pulled out a creased and dog-eared volume.
Martha accepted it reverently. âIâll have a list by morning, along with a list of what we can sell and how much we expect to get, although town prices might be different. People out here mightnât be interested in fancy goods.â
