CHAPTER THREE
In the palace at Meth, Mirjel sat motionless in her chambers.
Lek boiled water in the hearth and made kan for her mistress.
A Daro healer entered. âHighness, the spell is complete. As suspected, you carry Prince Crayaâs child.â
Mirjel closed her eyes. âDear Ilidel.â
âââ
It was frustrating for Gilyon, Refran, Womb and Luja to hold a conversation via terec. Messages crossed and new comments were made.
This didnât matter to them. They would do anything to prevent the birth of Mirjelâs child before she could introduce her blood line into the royal family.
Over several days, a plan was formed.
âââ
Mirjel stood on the balcony of her bed chambers on a starlit night. She listened to waves wash against the base of the rock pinnacle below. Even though there was no sign of pregnancy, she held her hand over her belly.
Mirjel no longer saw Craya. He was often drunk and ignored official duties. She met with the ministers and handed out orders to the bureaucrats. No one questioned her authority in the daily running of the palace. However, the Barasha made it clear this authority didnât extend beyond.
Lek brought kan and a small cake. âYou must eat, Highness.â
âIâm not hungry, Lek.â
âAt least have some kan. Think of the child.â
She thought of little else. The Barasha would need her for a while to nurse the infant. They certainly intended to raise the babe.
She closed her eyes and dreamed it was Ryckairâs child inside her as she asked herself if he was still alive.
A knock came at the door.
Lek opened it a slit.
Baron Refran stood in the hall.
Lek stepped back and curtsied. âHow may I help you, my lord?â
âI wish to speak with Princess Mirjel on urgent business.â
Lek looked to Mirjel who nodded.
Once inside, Refran ran across the room and pinned Mirjel against the railing of the balcony.
She twisted around and jammed her thumbs into both his eyes.
He screamed and released her as he held his hand over his face. âWhere are you?â
Mirjel dashed across the balcony.
Refran ran in her direction.
She dropped flat.
The baron tripped on her body and tumbled over the railing to the lake below.
A mechanical click sounded in the room.
Mirjel reached for her bodice knife, only to remember Yetigâs guards confiscated all her weapons. âLek, stand behind me.â
A part of the wall next to the hearth swung open. Mirjel saw a stairway. Her first thought was a trap set by Craya. He was cruel enough. When he wasnât drunk, he wandered the halls of the palace and struck servants who drew too near. More often, he simply stood alone against the walls and muttered to himself.
Lek said, âWhat shall we do, Highness?â
Oraneâs voice came from the darkness. âPrincess Mirjel?â
Mirjel watched in disbelief as the chief Kyar stepped through the secret doorway.
She said, âMaster Orane. How can it be? You escaped across the bridge. The servants saw it.â
âItâs a long tale, Highness.. Youâll hear it in full. For now, we have much to do.â
She ran forward and took his arm. âOh, Master. Is it really you?â She made the sign of the covenant with tears in her eyes.
