I ended up missing my train to the north that day anyway, so I called my old Taoist friend Brother Clarity, who lived in southern France, and asked him if I could stay the night at his place. Brother Clarity must have been in his fifties, but had the wisdom of a man twice his age. His rambling old farmhouse was set at the end of a valley, hidden in a grove of trees. All along the valley there were vineyards that produced excellent wine. Since his retirement, Brother Clarity had led a reclusive life there, studying old Chinese tales of the strange and supernatural. He kindly offered me some money for my train ticket and a change of clothes. We polished off a bottle of red wine together and sat chatting about certain subtleties and allusions in our favourite classical texts.
