CHAPTER 37

The horrendous pain coursed through Vyn like a lightning bolt, causing his mangled and broken body to twist and writhe. He snapped his head up and roared before his whole body slumped in agony. His breathing came hard, fast, and hoarse. His talons trembled from his distress. He tried to control the shaking but failed. “It grows worse,” he rasped to himself. “Can’t let them see me like this.”

He stood frozen for a moment, willing his mind to gain control of his mutilated body. The torture slowly subsided, and he drew himself up until he could stand. He drew in several deep breaths to fill his lungs with the sulfur-tainted air.

With a snarl of determination, he pushed himself forward. A back claw, crushed and little more than a hard stump, dragged behind his massive body.

Vyn ponderously lumbered up the black granite incline until he stood looking down at the three who waited for him. By the way they avoided meeting his eyes, he could tell in an instant that they did not bear good news. “Well, Taurus?” he thundered. “Wind Storm? Strong Wind? Cara?”

Wind Taurus flicked his eyes to each side to his evil brethren, Burning Wind and Wind Hawk. Why me? he thought. Why does he always call upon me, and I endure his wrath? Why not these two sniveling little snakes? I’ve taken my share of beatings and have the scars as proof.

“Taurus! Speak!” Vyn bellowed again. “Do not keep me waiting!”

With a bit of trepidation, Taurus took a step forward. “We’ve searched, Great One, oh how we’ve searched. We’ve sent messages out to your loyal subjects to hunt for them as well. But—”

He hesitated. “So far, nothing, Sire. We cannot find them.”

“No!” Vyn bellowed. Enraged, he lashed his head back and forth, spewing a volcanic stream of dragon fire. The flames ate at the high ceiling, melting the hard rock. The fiery-red slag began to drip downward before cooling to form tiny stone stalactites hanging from the roof. Below, small, rounded glowing pools formed on the floor like flaming pancakes.

The giant beast slowly lowered his head, his lips drawn back over his huge fangs in a savage snarl. He waited a moment before he locked eyes with Wind Taurus. “Wind Storm has two choices and two choices only,” Vyn growled. “He either joins with me, or he dies. Do you and the others understand? If you cannot convince him to bring his power to me, then you are to kill him.”

“Yes, Sire,” Taurus muttered, “we understand clearly.”

“Strong Wind and Cara,” Vyn boomed, “I want them back! Do you hear me! Bring them back to me! They are mine, and I shall have what is mine!”

“We’re trying, Sire,” Taurus replied, averting his eyes from the raging Vyn. “Trust me—we’re doing everything we can.”

“If you were truly doing ‘everything,’” Vyn snapped, “then I would have them back in my possession and chained in my dungeon.”

“Great One, please,” Taurus implored, “we are constantly searching, truly we are.”

Vyn could feel
