When Abarōz awoke, the first thing she saw were two heads, both worriedly looking at her.

“Shāhpuhr?” she asked groggily, trying to restore her vision. At the moment, she saw four of him.

“How are you?” he asked, running his hands down her sides. Her plate had been removed. “Does this pain you?”

“No,” Abarōz croaked, accepting a skin from him and gulping down cool water. There was just one thing on her mind. “Did we win?”

At her grassy bedside, Bükrek shook her head.

“I fear not,” she said. “Sangal called in reinforcements, and we were overwhelmed.”

Abarōz shut her eyes. She wanted to sit up, but wondered if the effort was even worth it.

“How many?” she asked. “How many did we lose?”

“Seven,” Shāhpuhr answered. “Aswārs and dragons.”

Something ripped at Abarōz like an ebren’s claw. She opened her eyes to face her two friends.

“It can’t be!” she cried. “Were they not afraid of Bükrek?!”

“Some,” said Shāhpuhr, “but, alas, not enough. Sangal’s hold on his horde seems only to increase.”

Abarōz couldn’t help the tears sprinkling her face. This war, she feared, was lost. They would never recover.

“Do not cry, my child,” said Bükrek. “There are more dragons yet stirring in the south. Like the ones who gave their lives, they are willing to fight for freedom. They know that Sangal will come for them—it is just a matter of time.”

The subject of dragons stirred something in Abarōz.

“Az?” she whispered.

“He died bravely,” Bükrek told her, “in a cause he truly believed in.”

“And Dardan?”

“Safe for now,” said Shāhpuhr. “Once we retreated, Sangal’s horde did too. I suppose they weren’t too eager to break through solid stone.”

“Good.”

For the first time, she was glad of Dardan’s caves.

Bükrek smiled down at her.

“You should get some more rest.”

The green dragon slid off.

“Always the mother, that one,” Shāhpuhr grinned. “Careful, or she might start teaching you Dragon!”

“I wouldn’t mind. But, Shāhpuhr—” Abarōz ran her fingers over the length of her body, amazed to find it whole. “How–how did I survive?”

He plopped down beside her.

“I returned my debt to you by stealing that purple dragon’s blood. You know the rest.”

“I–I don’t remember.”

“That’s because your spirit was sleeping.”

“Oh.” Abarōz wiped away more tears. So . . . Shāhpuhr had saved her life. She felt incredibly grateful, and at the same time humbled. “Thank you,” she whispered.

He bent to kiss her cheek.

“We are now even.”

They shared a quiet moment after the frenzy of battle. Abarōz put up a hand to stroke his stubbled jaw. Shāhpuhr was her very best friend, and, just maybe, something more . . .

The mood was shattered as she thought of Dardan again.

“The city,” she choked, “will soon run out of water. Once all are dead, Sangal will clear out the mine.”

“I imagine,” said Shāhpuhr, “that my father will let the zarran live.”

Abarōz felt a rage that bubbled into her throat.

“Of course,” she snapped, “for the S̆āh lives to serve Sangal.”

“Both he and the dragon share an unnatural love of gold.”

Abarōz nodded, rising shakily to her feet.

“Were you,” she asked, “able to save any others with the dragon’s blood?”

“Yes.
