Edonous walked into the stable, his feet crunching against the thick hay on the ground. He held a brush in his hand as he approached the black beauty. The horse neighed back at him as he reached for her. His hand touched the side of her face and he smiled. He turned around to his daughter, Anneliese.

“Come,” he said. “Meet your horse.”

Anneliese’s grin reached from ear to ear. She was an adult now, sixteen years of age, and about to receive her first horse. Edonous had let her ride ponies before, as well as donkeys and mules. But this was her first horse. And instead of it being the family’s, it was hers, and hers alone.

She reached up to touch the horse. The beautiful creature nuzzled her. Anneliese scratched the animal behind the ears before using her brush to gently caress the horse’s neck.

Edonous smiled at his daughter. He was so proud of her. He’d taught her to treat all people and all creatures with kindness, and she’d learned it well. She took after her mother—always wanting to see the good in people. Always treating people and animals with compassion and love.

He turned to brush his own horse. This was a day Edonous had been looking forward to. Anneliese’s sixteenth birthday was something he feared, but the day after was a day he’d been eager to reach. He’d blocked off his schedule for the entire day to spend it with her.

The city could run itself for one day. Today was a day his daughter needed. A day he needed. A day outside of the city and in the fields, just the two of them.

After brushing their horses, they opened the gates and got into their saddles. Their horses walked out of the stable and into the sunslight. It was a beautiful spring day, with both suns shining and birds chirping as they flew overhead. A handful of lush white clouds balanced in the blue sky. The weather was phenomenal. No jacket needed and only a light breeze. It would get a little colder as they rode, but not enough to need a jacket.

Edonous glanced over at his daughter and smiled. “Are you ready, sweetheart?”

“Ready, Father.”

“Hiya,” he called as he kicked his spurs into the horse.

His horse took off first, but within seconds, Anneliese trailed him, catching up fast. Her horse was much younger than his, but he’d been with his horse for years. He would never think of trading him for a younger one. They were more than human and animal. They were friends. Edonous treasured his relationship with all the animals he owned, and he taught Anneliese to treasure her relationships the same way.

They rode for almost an hour before the horses needed a break. The horses hadn’t been at full gallop the entire time, else they would have already fallen over, but they went from racing to trotting to walking, all while talking to each other.

Edonous loved his conversations with his daughter. They talked about everything from life to love to her lifelong passions.
