The dragon in front of Lilianya was massive. Its rider dismounted and stepped toward her, a twinkle of glee in his eye. Lilianya wanted to fight back. She wanted—but she was too weak. Her arm had struck something on their descent. She held onto it tight, trying to prevent any more blood from trailing down. Was this how it was going to end?

A bolt of lightning hit the ground between them. The dragonrider stumbled backwards, glancing up at the sky. A shadow appeared over the two of them.

Lilianya looked up, expecting to see Koko, but no, Koko was injured behind her. Instead, she found a glittering gold wyvern and a little girl riding him.

Sparkles and Faelyn had returned.

The dragonrider rushed back over to his dragon. He climbed the ladder and onto the saddle. He’d completely forgotten about Lilianya. She no longer mattered to him.

Faelyn led the dragonrider away as Sparkles spun and did flips over the camp.

Lilianya thought the little girl foolish, yet she was grateful for what she’d done. She turned around to see Koko. One paw appeared a little distorted. Lilianya knelt and felt the paw. Koko growled.

“It’s sprained,” Lilianya whispered.

Koko whined, moving her paw up to balance herself on three legs. She was injured, but she was ready to fight. Ready to battle.

Lilianya turned her attention to herself. The gash in her right arm was bad, and she had to do something about it so she could help as well. Lilianya could hardly leave Faelyn to face the remaining dragonriders by herself.

She glanced around and found an unconscious pirate on the ground. Lilianya ripped off a large portion of the woman’s shirt. She placed it between her teeth and clenched as she focused her mind.

She used wind first to inspect her wound and ensure nothing was inside of it. Once she was confident she’d removed any obstruction, she changed from wind to fire. It burned, and she clenched her teeth tighter over the shirt in her mouth. It may have burned, but it would cauterize the wound and allow her to fight.

When she finished, she tied the shirt around the cauterized wound and peered at the sky. Faelyn had circled back around to face the dragonrider. Another bolt of lightning traveled from Sparkles’s mouth, and it slammed into the dragon, blasting it from the sky.

Lilianya smiled. She knew the little girl could handle herself, but there was more than a single rider in the sky.

“Are you ready, Koko?” Lilianya asked.

Koko leaned her head down, allowing Lilianya to climb on top of her. When she was secure on the wyvern’s back, she massaged Koko’s neck. Koko took the signal, as she leapt into the air.

Thankfully, she hadn’t damaged a wing, but Koko’s ascent was a bit wobbly. Her balance was a little off, with only three of her feet pushing off the ground. Once high in the sky, Koko leveled out. She still leaned slightly right, and Lilianya was careful not to throw off her equilibrium as she rode her.
