THE NEXT DAY FOLLOWED the same pattern as all the days before, but now I had a purpose. A woman that would be mine and a girl I was sanctioned to kill to protect. Oh, the woman might not be willing to admit yet she was mine, and I wasn’t ready to admit she was to her. I knew for certain if I did, she would run. I was well past denying it to myself.

Two hours after lunch, they came to take me for my walk to watch their warriors train. Perhaps the plan was to show me how strong their warriors were. I’d filed that away, but also each of their weaknesses. Now, for the two who had put their hands on what was mine, I would teach them the folly of their actions. As we approached the field, I saw the red-headed male from yesterday. He would be the first. The other was terrified of her. He could wait, for now, but there would come a day. I looked over my shoulder at my guards. “Am I permitted to exercise?”

“You’re out of your cage and taking a walk,” one guard sneered. “You don’t need more than that.”

“What did you have in mind?” I knew that voice, my former target I strangely found becoming a friend. I looked past the guard to see Isaiah and the prince walking up.

Something about the dragon told me he would understand what I was about to say. I gave a jerk of my head and Isaiah stepped forward. As he raised his hands to stop the guards from following, he took a few steps away from them and leaned in, waiting.

“Someone touched what is mine.” I said as softly as I could. The dragon nodded, then looked at the prince. In the past three weeks, I’d learned anam cara could speak telepathically, though mine still refused to speak to me. He refocused on me.

“Hand to hand only. No killing blows. And we’re going to call in a few extra dragons.” Isaiah gave me the terms. “Sorry, but—”

“You still don’t completely trust me.” I had yet to do anything that made them distrust me more, but neither had I done anything they knew of to gain more of their trust either. “I agree to the terms.” Then turned to the ring and pointed out the dragon that had held her too close. “Him.”

Isaiah looked at the other dragon, then back at me. “He’s decent. A few decades older than me. He’s got greater strength and speed on you, but I have a feeling you will beat him in underhanded tactics.” His lips turned up slightly. “Should be interesting. I may even pick up a few moves.”

I raised my eyebrow in question.

“Nothing wrong with fighting dirty, if the situation calls for it. And touching someone else’s things is definitely worth it.”

I let my lips curl slightly. I was right believing Isaiah would understand. There was a connection between us I could not explain. One I’d never felt with anyone before in my life.
