Loch

“As I’m sure you know, I met with Arctavia Pond last night,” Leviathan said, shifting her weight in her seat.

She looked radiant. Not because she wore a frivolous gown or accessories, but because she always shined in my eyes. In fact, she was dressed plainly, as if trying to subconsciously tell me this was nothing more than a formality—decidedly not a courtship.

I was fine with that mirage. I was sure she could see the cold hunger as my eyes roamed over her warm body. She had come to me alone, as I’d requested, and that took grit. I had no illusions about my character: how I acted, who I was, and how people thought of me. The Wintersons had always been a strict, emotionless people, and I was no different than my father or his father before him.

The only hint of kindness in my family line came from my broodmother, Avalan, who was kept out of sight from political proceedings. She also wasn’t a formal member of the Winterson line. Like the other broodmothers who had been called up when Queen Glendriana’s mates found out they wouldn’t be siring children from their queen, Avalan had been a means to an end.

I brought my digressing thoughts back to the matter at hand and focused on Leviathan, who sat across from me at the expansive dining table.

I had given her a traditional Winter House meal of fish, crab cakes, and rice, and was somewhat surprised to see her chow down the entire plate. Leviathan was no dainty flower when it came to eating. I wondered what other voracious appetites she harbored . . .

“Stop staring at me, Loch,” she said, folding her hands in front of her. Then she moved them from the tabletop and put them underneath so I couldn’t see them.

I could tell she was nervous but trying to hide her anxiety with a tough-girl approach. Which was fine with me, because I appreciated a woman who took charge. It was partly why Crystal Oceanrite had always been my favorite commander. Despite not feeling a physical attraction for Crystal, I respected her.

Can I find the same respect for Leviathan Sunfall? The Princess of the Dragon Dominion. The Silver Queen. Her titles were becoming numerous. Since word of her existence came into play a few months prior, she had quickly risen in popularity.

My scouts told me she’d befriended Baneloth in the Havenlands; that she had traveled to the forest fae and mountain fae and left both of those areas alive, which was more than most could say. And, of course, she had found mates in Coalt Firesworn and Rook Clayborn, two powerful alphas.

For a moment, I pondered if she was out of my league here, in terms of accolades and authority. Then I snubbed the ridiculous idea, knowing that no one was out of my league when it came to leadership and strategy. I had been an alpha longer than my three House counterparts, and had the experience to weather any storm.
