CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
Rohan stepped forward when he saw Isaut crumble into her father's arms, but Waltrand stopped him.
"Kassandra will take care of her wound," the blond man said. "It's a flesh wound, don't worry."
Rohan nodded and watched Foulque take his unconscious daughter to the High Priestess. The redhead must have had a hell of a fight. What awaited him?
"You can go now." Waltrand pointed at the spiral staircase.
"What will I find?" he asked.
"Only what you take with you. You have a fair idea of both the powers that run in your veins by now. I'm sure you can handle both of them. If you run into any problems, come back up. I'll be here. Your mother would do the same."
"I heard her entrust me to you," Rohan said sourly. "Are you my father by any chance?"
"No, I'm not." Waltrand looked away. "Although I would have loved to be."
Then his mother had entrusted him to her team leader because she trusted him, clearly. The way Waltrand had touched his hair and said that it felt like Jasmine's had made Rohan hope he had actually found his real father, but clearly there was something else between Waltrand and Jasmine.
The gem and the blue eye stared at him again.
"If you must know, I loved your mother," Waltrand said in a challenging tone. "But I was cursed, and she could never return my feelings."
"Oh. I'm sorry, she never mentioned you, and all I could do was wonder," Rohan apologized.
"It's fine. Now go down that staircase and beat the creatures you'll find. You won't need your sword, as you've seen with Thiebaud."
With a last hesitation, Rohan unbuckled his sword belt and gave it to Waltrand who nodded, serious. Rohan nodded back and headed down the spiral staircase. Almost immediately he snapped his fingers to make light, and found himself in a small cave with no obvious exit, but air passed through from invisible openings.
His white magic light went off and he couldn't light it again. He tensed, waiting for something to happen.
A crash in the darkness, a clamor of metal, and suddenly he was one-on-one with a loathsome creature of hatred and blood. Three bleak eyes stared at him with an infernal madness, and another crash exploded from its thin mouth in pure agony.
Six enormous horns adorned its rugged head, which itself was as dark as the cave. The sound of a roaring fire escaped the creature's gnarled nostrils set within a hanging nose.
Its head sat atop a vast, bony body. Runes or emblems, each glowing brightly, covered parts of its torso, seemingly like a reminder of some event in the past.
The creature advanced towards him, its two legs calmly carrying its shadowy body with a serene energy. The creature's eyes were still affixed on him and Rohan shivered, but didn't panic.
He channeled his energy into a single blade of light and darkness intertwined, like Waltrand and Foulque had taught him to do. The runes on the demon's body glowed brighter as a smell of sulfur permeated the small cave.
