Chapter Sixteen
An awful decaying stench laced with musk hit my nose as the bear approached. The grizzlyâs ice-green eyes held a human-like quality.
Wait. Intrigue replaced my fear. Is he a shifter?
Yes, Egan growled as Draco stepped in front of us.
When this was all over, Iâd need a flowchart or diagram of all of the shifters in the world. Hell, maybe even a detailed outline. It was beyond insane how much I didnât know.
âOne bear thinks it can take us out?â Roxy chuckled and flipped her hair over her shoulder. âThere are four wolves, two vampires, and three dragons.â
Ollie jerked his head toward her and scowled. âAnd a falcon.â
âOh, please.â She waved him off. âYou donât count.â
âIn all fairness, he pecked through several girlsâ eyes and necks.â Lillith shrugged, completely at ease like Roxy. âAnd he pecked through that wire net that held Jade.â
They did have a point, but they needed to take the threat more seriously. I have a bad feeling about this. The bear doesnât seem worried.
My thoughts exactly. Egan looked at the sky.
At first, I wasnât sure why. then I heard the flapping of several pairs of wings overhead like a synchronized beat. I couldnât tell how many. It could have been ten or hundreds.
âOllie.â I glanced at him, the hairs on the back of my neck raised. If I hadnât known any better, I might have thought I was a wolf shifter, not a dragon. âGo to Titanâs pack and get them and the other dragons.â
âWhat?â Katherine faced me. âWhy?â
âListen,â Donovan growled. âThe bearâs not alone. Tell them to bring weapons. We have no clue what weâre up against. If theyâre fae, the iron might help too.â
That was all Ollie needed to hear before taking off. We might need backup and quick. Out of all of us, Ollie was the smallest when he shifted and could hide. Whatever was coming sounded huge.
âHow is this possible?â Lillithâs jaw twitched. âThe witch is dead. How did they find us?â
âMom.â My voice cracked. âI need to check on her.â
We will, but right now, we need to keep our heads in the game and hope Ollie gets back with everyone soon. Egan lifted his head, looking higher in the sky.
I followed his gaze, and my world stopped. The strangest animals Iâd ever seen were flying toward us, which was saying something after the harpies and gargoyles.
Each one looked the same. Enormous, scarlet lions beat long, boney wings that sprouted from their backs. They each had a thick, long, scorpion-like tail tipped with a dangerous stinger as well as numerous stingers along its huge tail. Their red faces resembled an old man with a very long beard that matched the red shade of their bodies.
âWhat the hell is it with fae creatures looking like old people?â Sadie groaned as she returned her focus to the bear.
âLooking old is a strategic advantage.â That was something theyâd taught me in self-defense class. âYou think of them as weaker and lower your guard around them. Apparently, the fae must think the same way, or they find the look sexy.
