Chapter Sixteen

Tristan

I looked down at my son as we drove along the dusty desert road. He peered out of the window, gazing at the natural beauty of the world.

“It’s a hell of a sight, isn’t it?” I said. He didn’t turn to face me. “I bet it’s a lot different to what you’re used to.” He nodded. “I think this place is more beautiful than the city. Man is capable of a lot of great things, but all these tall and ugly skyscrapers are nothing compared to what nature can do. I mean look at those sweeping mountains and the way the color of the earth blends together to create that purple shade. It’s just beautiful,” I said. I could wax lyrical about our environment all day. Of course, it looked even more beautiful from above, but I couldn’t tell him about that yet. I had to ask him more questions. Kira had said that she hadn’t taught him anything about the glory we hold inside our hearts, but the dragon inside is instinctual and I had no doubt that Deke had some inkling of what he could be, even if Kira hadn’t told him.

I’m sure she was a good mother, but in this respect she had failed him and it was an error that I could not forgive.

Deke merely continued staring out of the window. “You know, I always hoped to meet you,” I continued, “and I always wanted to bring you out here. I don’t know how much your mother told you about me, or if she told you anything at all, but I never wanted to be a stranger to you, Deke. I do admit that when I learned I was going to be a father it was quite a daunting prospect. I had other commitments that I was looking to explore, and your mother just couldn’t understand what I was trying to do. I’ll explain it all to you though. I’m sure you’ll understand better than she could. It’s something that a father should pass on to a son anyway. She wanted me to stay away. That’s the only reason why we haven’t met yet. I’m sorry, Deke, but I hope that I can make it up to you now we’re together. There’s so much that I want to share with you, and we’ll get to all that in time, but right now I think we should just spend some time getting to know each other. I’m sure this place is different to what you’re used to, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. It’s quiet out here, reflective. The city has always seemed too busy. I bet it’s noisy, isn’t it?” I asked.

Deke nodded. So far I was a little disappointed that he wasn’t more talkative, but I suppose that was something I was going to have to teach him too. Kira had really done him a disservice by taking him away from me.

“Well, out here you can really hear yourself think, and thinking is one of the best things anyone can do.
