Chapter Four

I’d decided I wanted to see Illyrian, and we were halfway to the Mageri tunnels when a Dreki guard intercepted us with a sealed note that he handed to Yasra.

Yasra broke the seal and read it with a frown.

“What is it?” Wex asked.

“Primian has requested we escort Anya to the great hall immediately. He wants to see her right away.”

“I thought he was in a meeting with Orion?”

Wex shrugged. “It must be over.”

Immediately and right away sounded a little bossy and presumptuous. Plus taking orders wasn’t my forte.

The note annoyed me. “Why would he want to see me so urgently?”

Yasra shrugged. “To feel like he has control. The lords practically dumped you in his lap without any warning. You’re Anara’s heir and he had no clue. He probably wants to reset the balance and let you know how important the Mageri are.”

“Control the new queen?” I arched a brow. “Show me how much power he has?”

“Pretty much,” Wex agreed.

I was inclined to turn him down, simply because the tone of his request had pissed me off, but we had a traitor faction of Mageri in our midst and Primian could be the ringleader. If he was the culprit, then ignoring his summons would be as good as tipping him off that I suspected something.

No. Best to go. Put him in his place, or kick his ass if he turned out to be the bad guy. Either way, it was a win-win situation.

Yasra and Wex waited for my decision.

I pocketed the note. “Lead the way, guys.”
