Chapter twelve

Dragon Dreaming

Madras shook her head and stood. “Is there a point to communing with the trees?”

Seguin and Zyla both said, “Yes,” grinned at each other and repeated, “Yes.”

“Fine. How long are we going to be standing in silence, chatting them up?” She glared at the trees and rolled her eyes. “Should I pack up the horses and be ready for our sudden departure? I thought I was coming along to keep you two safe and help Zyla have control over her magic, but you aren’t making it easy. We need a systematic approach, a plan. And we need it before we’re found again.”

“I have a plan,” Seguin said, patting the tree and stepping away. “Let’s head up to the cave. There’s no point in throwing our emotions around and upsetting the Nahlyns.”

“Well, yes, let’s not let it be said that I didn’t put trees ahead of survival.” Madras spun on her heel and marched up the path.

“She’s angry,” Zyla said.

Seguin snorted.

Zyla faced the young tree, ran her hand down the faintly wrinkled bark, and sent soothing thoughts. All is well.

Seguin reached out when she turned, stopping her from following Madras. “She’s worried. The razers have caught up to us twice. She’s fearful of what will happen, and she has reason to be. We are safe here; she just doesn’t believe that.”

“Is there some way to show her? You can start by showing me. Why are we safe here?”

Seguin leaned against the tree he had been talking to and folded his arms across his chest. He stared at the whispering leaves far overhead.

She followed his gaze. Even young, the Nahlyns were still huge.

“Zyla, these trees can do what Madras does; they absorb and block magic coming in or going out. Actually, I imagine they can do more than that.”

“Madras, too.” Was it because he knew her when she was young that he kept missing what Madras could do was far greater than act as a cloth for sopping up magical spills? After a moment, it appeared he might have realized his mistake.

Seguin dipped his chin, acknowledging the truth of the statement. “I didn’t want her to come along because I was certain this place would protect us. But you and she are right. She can help you gain control faster. Maybe the Nahlyns can do that, too. I don’t know, but it’s because of her that I gained the control I needed.”

“I don’t understand. When I was bound, I had a teaspoon of magic. You have enough, bound, that you needed aid in controlling it. Why? How is that?”

“Not fair, huh?”

His rogue smile blossomed on his face. He really was attractive when he smiled.

His gaze intensified as if he wondered what she was thinking.

Zyla put on her scholarly face, the one she used in class to pretend her interest in the subject taught was so thorough, nothing could penetrate her concentration. Not a spell that made her nose tickle so much she had to fight not to sneeze. Or a book dropped on her desk from several feet in the air the moment the instructor turned his back.
