We followed him back inside and jogged downstairs to where his laptop and multiple papers were spread out all over the breakfast bar. But it wasn’t the papers that held my attention—that was all for the lithe, golden-skinned woman who sat on the counter as if she owned it.

“Wynter!”

Her nod was grim, so unlike her usual casual, laid-back self that I knew her news wasn’t good.

“Kira, Draven.” She jerked her head in Faris’ direction. “He tell you yet?”

I shook my head.

“Pretty sure your dragon is holed up in a cabin just outside of Evergreen, Colorado.”

“You’ve seen her?” Draven obviously wasn’t ready to get excited just yet.

“I heard that a dragon has been seen in the area. Green. So I sent one of my crew to check it out. He followed her around for a while. She’s obviously being careful, but he finally caught her shifting.”

“Is your guy still on it?”

“He’s still in place. He’ll let me know if she seems nervous or bolts.”

“We’ll need to move fast,” Faris said. “She hasn’t stayed alive this long by failing to recognize threats. My guess is, if we don’t get there in the next eight hours, she’ll be long gone.”

“Agreed,” Wynter said, sliding off the counter. “My crew and I are willing to help with the ambush if you want.”

Faris bent a glowing green gaze on her. “Why?”

She glowered back, the tips of her curly, sun-kissed brown hair alight with her elemental fire. “I have a stake in this too, old man. And just like you, I don’t stop until I get what I want.”

Rath. There had been something between the two of them after our return from Idria. Like she couldn’t decide whether she hated him or wanted to kiss him. That suggested she would be at least somewhat motivated to save him, which meant we could probably trust her information.

But Faris still looked mulish. “Just you,” he said. “I don’t want your crew. This is too sensitive, and I can’t risk screw-ups.”

I expected Wynter to object that her crew knew their business, but she just jerked a nod, as if she’d expected that answer.

“So,” I said, “when do we leave?”

Faris was still staring at Wynter when he said, “We don’t.”

There was no mistaking his meaning. “You’re planning to leave me here,” I accused.

He answered without hesitation. “I’m not convinced this isn’t a trap.”

It might be. But I still wanted to go. If this was real, it might be my only chance to talk to Morgan. “I’ll be just as safe there as I am here,” I argued. “And anyway, Draven and I can’t be separated that long.”

Faris looked over at Draven. “We can get there and back in twelve hours or less. Could you handle that long?”

After a momentary pause, Draven nodded. “Yes. But you’ll have to convince us both that leaving Kira here is the right thing to do.”

I could have kissed him. Well, I could kiss him pretty much anytime, but especially when he reminded me why I loved him in the first place.
