CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The following day, we figured out what had happened. Aelis guided my way into the intricate tunnel system that spread out ahead, small tunnels ranging off to the sides every ten feet. "Please do enter, Sire. We have explored the tunnels. There is no risk at present."

We walked straight through the main tunnel. It was very obviously not a natural tunnel. Efforts had been made to reinforce the tunnel, and I could see a real doorway far off. The door was hanging off the hinges. As we moved further, I recognized what I was now starting to call a classic underground dragon lair. A large open cave, this one low-ceilinged, with a nice, clean centre in the middle for the dragon to rest and admire his hoard.

Except, the place had been smashed and only bones remained, along with several cored-out Hevron carapaces. The hoard had been picked clean, and soot marks showed where some sort of attack had blackened floors and ceilings. Whatever had happened had been damaging and overwhelming. I frowned at the scenery and turned toward Aelis. "What do you think happened here?"

She looked more calm than she had any right to be in the face of this kind of destruction. Her emotions mirrored the same, resignation and acceptance being foremost. "This would have been the hidden lair of a dragon, I would wager. Did you notice the entrance, Milord? The boulders next to it would have kept the entrance half-hidden, were they dragged in front of the entrance. Obviously, somebody located them regardless and slaughtered them."

She pointed back at the hallway we had passed. "The smaller tunnels would be the homes of the Hevrons. They create these tunnels naturally as they expand. It is in their nature. Now, either they fled through the tunnels as their master, the dragon, was slain, or some of them were outside the lair when they were attacked. That would leave them rudderless and masterless, which is why they were stupid enough to attack us without at least scouting for our entire group first."

"Huh." I looked at the massive amount of destruction, limbs and scuff marks at the center of the cavern. "That sounds logical. So, what about this Hevron Queen you talked about?"

She waved dismissively. "Oh. The Dragon will have killed her before being able to assume mastery over the Hevrons. They can only fathom one master at a time."

I nodded, seeing the development. "So, one of the dragons from my clutch is bound to be relatively close from here?"

"That would be my conclusion as well, Sire."

I smiled. Even in the face of widespread destruction, this was good news. "Great. Let's go hunting."

Our luck persisted. One of the other scouts was able to find marks from where somebody had been dragging heavy items over the ground - presumably the entire contents of a hoard and dragon larder. The tracks persisted going straight northward, and I conferred with Aelis yet again. "How does that route suit us?"

"It could be a lot worse, Sire.
