CHAPTER

He is definitely going to propose to you. He wants to make it official, proper. What else would he want to talk to you about? The man is in love. He literally put himself in extreme danger to save your mother because he was trying to make you happy,” Gwen speculated as we rode back to the palace.

My mother smiled at how excited Gwen was for me, watching how she could barely sit still.

“He’s not going to propose. Billy? Is he suddenly ready to settle down? Since when?” I asked as a mix of happiness and dread fought inside me.

“Since he realised his mistake…since he found out you have a part of him inside you. What man in his right mind wouldn’t do the right thing by you?”

I still found it strange that Gwen wasn’t rooting for her brother. She still firmly believed Billy was the right man for me and I felt buoyed by her strong faith. Clearly, there was something she saw in us—a strong connection.

“Mark my words, he will propose to you, and you’d better say yes.”

“Wait…what if he does actually propose to me?”

I started breathing quicker and shook my hands wildly, so Gwen reached over to hold my hand.

“Okay, calm down. Do you want to marry him? You have to search yourself and figure out what you want to do at this point in your life. And remember that we are all here for you.”

“Not at all.”

My mother smiled at Gwen and was helped down the carriage steps by a guard who then escorted her inside.

“What’s up?” Worry crept into Gwen’s eyes.

“Nothing. I just didn’t want my mother to see where I was going next.”

“Why? Where are you headed?” Gwen asked, concerned.

“I need to practice. If I have to sit around all day, doing little or nothing, I might go crazy. So, I’m going to go and work on my swordsmanship.”

The palace midwife had banned me from all extracurricular activities that could cause harm to the baby. The only exercise I was allowed to do now was a long walk in the garden with two maids trailing behind me. I did like to read on a park bench and watch the change of the guards, but other than that, I was bored out of my mind. I didn’t even see my mother much as my father constantly courted her, so this shopping trip was extra lovely as she had joined us.

“Wait! Hold on, you can’t swing swords around. You’re pregnant…with a princess. Something could go drastically wrong,” Gwen insisted.

She blocked the door so I couldn’t get out of the carriage.

I sighed. “What do you suggest I do then?”

I couldn’t just sit around, obsessing over what Billy might ask me tonight.

“Wels! You can go painting with my brother. Ah,
