I peel my eyes open a few hours later. I didn’t get much sleep, but I never do after working overnight. I’ll get up and be tired all day, but it’s the only way I’ll fall asleep at a normal time tonight. The only way I get to spend time with Brynn.

Carefully climbing out of bed, I stare down at the gorgeous woman curled up with her head on my pillow. Her blonde hair is scattered around her like a halo, making her look even more adorable.

I know Brynn will be here soon. I’ve been texting Ma for the past twenty minutes and told her she could drop Brynn off, if she doesn’t mind. And because she’s the greatest Ma in the world, she happily agreed.

After slipping on a pair of pajama pants, I pad into the kitchen and start making some breakfast. I promised Summer she’d get breakfast if she stayed over and I'm not going to disappoint her.

Once the batter is ready, I pour some into the heated waffle iron. Waffles are Brynn’s favorite and she’ll be so excited to find me making them when she gets home.

There’s a stack of six finished waffles when the front door swings open and Brynn rushes into the kitchen.

“Hi, Daddy! Oh! You’re making waffles?” She bounces on her toes in excitement.

“Yup. How about you get some plates?”

“Do we need three?” She grins slyly at me. I'm sure she saw Summer’s car out front and knows she’s here.

“Four if Nana wants some.” I wink, making her giggle with excitement. I swear Brynn loves Summer even more than I do.

“Hey, sweetie.” Ma carries in Brynn’s little backpack and drops it onto the kitchen table. She kisses my cheek and watches me make breakfast.

“Hey, Ma. How was the little monster?”

“A princess, as usual.” She laughs as Brynn sets the table and then rearranges everything until it’s perfect.

“Nana, do you want waffles?” Brynn glances up from her work.

“I guess that depends on who the other plate is for.” She arches a brow in my direction.

“Summer had a rough night at work. I told her to come here this morning and we talked until she felt a little better. She’s still sleeping, but I promised breakfast.” I shrug, avoiding her gaze. Ma sees too much.

She’s heard so much about Summer. I wish they could meet, but I'm not sure today is the best time for that.

“Jake? Where are you?” Summer’s voice comes from down the hall and a slow smile spreads over Ma’s face. Shit. I don’t think Summer’s going to be happy.
