Chapter Seventeen

LUKXA

The library, though filled with papers and shelves serving as insulation, boomed with the sound of thunder. The unexpected storm that exploded the night before had ruined the entire day of training Lukxa had meticulously planned. It lingered all through the night and still plagued them through to the next evening.

He groaned internally. All the indoor training areas were already booked. There was no space large enough for Lukxa to finish the training session with his men that had been interrupted. Being unable to burn out his own energy was frustrating.

The rain did not seem eager to let up either.

Lukxa made sure to pen his group’s names in the next available indoor slot he could.

While both last night and this evening had gone as far from hoped as possible, it gave Lukxa the perfect situation to retreat into the library. Giving him a chance to try and find a copy of Sypher’s report where he listed the wrong numbers.

Lukxa paused, blinking slowly. The accounting ledger. The numbers were likely recorded there.

Yes, the library was far more useful than simply quenching Hollis’ curiosity,

The woman he’d seen as skin twice. Unabashed, endless, skin.

Lukxa’s face burned, his eyes wide as he ducked around another shelf in an attempt to clear his thoughts. He just needed a moment to right himself. A deep breath helped clear his mind of her.

Hollis trailed not far behind him. “This is more wonderful than I thought.” Her shoes clacked on the ground.

He turned to find Hollis dragging her fingers along the spines of books held on the shelves the two of them walked past.

Her eyes glowed in wonder as she took in the books that surrounded her, seemingly cataloging them in her own mind.

She waltzed past him, off to a different row. “Since we’re here while the library is closed, I take it you spoke with someone about obtaining that special key you mentioned before?”

Lukxa nodded. “Yes.” His voice shook slightly. He chewed the inside of his cheek and swallowed before speaking again. “Councilor Shad lent me one of his keys to the top floor. That’s where more restricted books are kept, only accessible by the Council and those with a permit.” His voice was far more stable this time.

He stepped past the edge of the row and found Hollis in the long aisle.

Hollis gave a tinkling laugh, her head still swirling around to take in at all the books that surrounded her. “Councilor Shad seems to have keys to a lot of different places. And the rest of the council was all right with that? You being allowed access?” She traced a hand against the metal organizational placard nailed to the shelf she stood at. She ducked into the row, out of his sight.

Lukxa scoffed. “It is Councilor Shad’s key to do with however he wishes. He does not need the council’s permission to give it to me, a fellow councilor.”

A flash of light filled the room from the glass ceiling above, which amplified the intense pittering sound of rain falling.
