Eia had numerous problems. Firstly, she dare not open her eyes, for though she had no idea what colour Gerantâs had been she was almost certain they were not honey-gold, as hers currently were. Secondly she did not know what the boy called his mother or how he spoke to her or what he liked to eat or drink. The easiest option: making him sleepy with no memory, was not really an option at all â she did not want to make him appear too sick or confused, for his mother had to believe him healed if she was to release Trae and Leo. Once she knew they were safe she planned to escape and join them.
She decided to risk a little more eye-fluttering, enough to keep her eyes hidden but to show she was awake, accompanied by a small exclamation and complaint of âtoo brightâ. At which Mira ordered the lights moved from near the bed and the room dimmed. âWhere is my mother? I need my mother,â the boy on the bed pleaded in a weak, lost voice. Whatever Gerant actually called his mother, that request was both vague and endearing enough not to arouse suspicion.
âMama is here, my love. Mama is here. And Papa will be here soon, I promiseâ â which alerted Eia that Gerant might have been expected to want his father before his mother. But ⦠perhaps not. Not today. She turned her head towards Mira and smiled. âMama.â
âOh, my boy!â
Eia found herself gathered into strong, needy arms and hugged ⦠and, despite the threats and the harsh treatment they had endured could not help herself take the womanâs unsuspected but debilitating blood disease into her own body, could not help but heal her torn womb so that she might carry another child to term. Enervated, she lay unconscious in Miraâs arms but her little boy breathing was normal, her little boy complexion was ruddy and her little boy lips were red so that Mira thought her son merely exhausted from his long illness.
âRelease the prisoners,â she ordered. âGive them food and good horses and make sure they leave.â With that, she curled up on the bed beside the child and fell asleep.
Eia woke first. Leo was leaning over her, knife poised over Miraâs throat. Eia shook her head and nodded first towards the window then back towards the door. Leo slipped out the way he had come, the child became a bird and the bird flew out through the open window.
