GWEN WAS SO THOROUGHLY bored she was reading an old magazine I kept on the counter, a LIFE from the 1940s. I thought the magazine would put people in the mood for history and antiques. I knew for a fact that Gwen didn’t give a fig about either history or antiques.

“Did you know that Pygmalion was a big hit play in nineteen forty-six?” Gwen asked.

“I would rather you tell me you had a big hit sale while I was gone,” I answered.

“Sorry,” Gwen said. “Not a single sale and only two lookers. I think they came in out of pity.”

“That’s all I need...pity.”

Gwen started for the door. “I have to run. Listening to my patients’ ills seems better than minding an empty store.”

“Wait,” I said. “Let me tell you about Jay Broker.”

“Who?”

“A coworker of Christina’s.”

“What makes this Jay so special?”

“I think he’s secretly in love with Christina, which puts him in the suspect sweepstakes.”

“Sounds interesting. But I still have to go.”

I watched Gwen leave, even as Orchid and Zephyr appeared.

“What about Jay?” Zephyr asked.

“He has anger issues, I think,” I said. “And probably some jealousy on top of that.”

“Oh my,” Orchid said. “That makes for a volatile personality.”

“It does indeed.”

At that moment, the daily group walked in the door.

I called them the daily group because they were three older couples that liked to walk together. Richardson’s Antiques must have been their halfway point. They came almost every day, spent ten minutes “trying out” the sofas and chairs, and then walked out. I didn’t mind, as they caused no harm, and having people roaming the store looked good from the street. They always smiled and waved, and I waved back, hoping that they would spend some money with me. If I had put in a coffee machine, they probably would have stayed longer. I didn’t ignore them, but I didn’t interact either.

The last of the daily group walked out of the store, and I had a moment with Orchid and Zephyr.

“They should buy more,” Orchid said.

“Lots more,” Zephyr added.

“I would like that too,” I said. “But I can’t make it happen, can I?”

Before they could answer, the door opened. Jacob and Watkins entered, and from their looks they were not happy. That was not something I needed. I had more than enough troubles.

“Gentlemen,” I said. “Why the long faces?

“Bad news,” Jacob said. “You are no longer on the case.”

“What? Wait, you mean it?”

“Afraid so,” Watkins said. “The order came from up the line. We don’t have a choice.”

“But why?” I asked. “Why would they kick me off the team?”

“There was a complaint,” Jacob said. “They had to do something?”

“Was it Jay Broker?” I asked. “Because I didn’t do anything. Christina was fine with it. So was Jay, in his own way.”

“It wasn’t Jay,” Jacob said.

“Then, who?” I asked. “I haven’t had a problem with anyone, not really.”

“It wasn’t anyone on the outside. It was someone in the department.”
