The next morning, Kevin was in his bedroom pushing a textbook into an already overstuffed backpack. The new shower schedule was working out and he was relieved that he didn't have to be in a rush to catch his bus. He heard a soft knock at his door as it slowly opened.

“Hey Kevin, you, um, decent?” Rachael asked from behind a half opened door.

“Yeah, everything's cool.”

Rachael finished opening the door. “Just wanted to apologize for screwing up your hang-time last night.”

“How?” Kevin asked.

“I sort of told your mom some stories about my middle school days around the ball fields. I think they spooked her, and she went out looking for you.”

“Oh, well, that's cool I guess. So, you got into trouble back then?”

“Not really.” Rachael paused as she looked around his bedroom. “I didn't hang with that sort of crowd, but I saw a lot. Sometimes it seemed like trouble was all around us.”

“I see that stuff, too. But not too close up, because we'd get our asses kicked.”

“Just stay out of the woods,” Rachael replied as she caught sight of an open yearbook on his desk. “Hey, is that your year--”

“Yup,” Kevin interrupted as he darted over to close it.

Rachael allowed a knowing chuckle. “So, who is she?”

“Who?”

“The girl you like. The one you're looking at in your yearbook.”

Kevin blushed. “No one.”

“Hey, I used to do the same thing,” Rachael reassured. “There were a couple of guys that I thought were gorgeous. I used to look at their pictures all the time and daydream. Of course, the thought of actually talking to them was unthinkable.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn't know how, and I was afraid that I'd make a complete fool of myself if I tried.”

“You?” Kevin asked with a laugh. “I'd think most guys would die to have you talk to them.”

Rachael smiled and rolled her eyes. “Everyone has their insecurities.”

“I don't think she'd ever want to talk to me anyway,” Kevin sheepishly admitted.

“You might be surprised. Just try to say hi to her and see what happens.”

“Kevin?” Sara called out from downstairs, “Time to get going.”

Kevin smirked and picked up his backpack. “Just saying hi could end my social life.”

Rachael chuckled. “I remember how it was. Just try to remember that we girls don't have nearly as much power as you think we do.”
