Chapter 9

The night was so pretty outside, Alyssa convinced Thomas to roll the windows down and let the cool air in. Nothing felt more exhilarating during the two-hour drive home than feeling nature against her skin and knowing she would soon be feeling Thomas’s hands instead.

She watched in amusement as Thomas broke the speed limit by at least ten miles an hour. His hands fisted the steering wheel, and in the darkness she could see the white knuckles from his grasp.

Alyssa wondered why she still thought of him as Thomas, even though there was solid evidence he was Chris. The only explanation she could come up with was the drastic differences between the two men. They might share the same body, but the men inside of it were as different as night and day.

Alyssa had fallen in love with both of them.

Even before seeing that freckle on him, Alyssa had loved Thomas. It hadn’t been much of a choice really. Little by little, he had inched into her life, being around or arguing with her, making her feel like she was a part of his life. Before she knew it, she couldn’t imagine a day, or a week without him. She said a prayer of thanks her first instinct about Thomas led her to stay. She didn’t want to think about what could have happened if she had walked away.

She didn’t care if Thomas was Chris or Chris was Thomas, she wanted both men. She didn’t care which form she got him in as long as he was still hers.

Her husband was alive.

As much as Alyssa could figure, she still thought of the man sitting next to her as Thomas because he was Thomas. Chris was a different man and, as sad as it made Alyssa to think she would never have him back in a literal sense, she knew everything would be okay.

The only thing that really bugged her was Thomas would never remember her. She could go on pretending they had just met, but she couldn’t do that to him. He was obviously bitter over the whole situation and it was her responsibility to give him some peace of mind.

Retrograde amnesia. Alyssa shook her head, still amazed she had never seen what was right in front of her.

Thomas pulled the truck into his driveway, the crunch of gravel like fireworks in the still night air. Alyssa heard a lone cricket hidden somewhere in the bushes chirp a greeting.

Thomas didn’t hesitate to cut the engine off and get out of the car. He opened the door for her and pulled her out, only to pin her against it the second it was shut.

He smiled down at her. “Just a little confession I need but don’t want to make...It may be big, but it’s neglected. I don’t want you to expect much the first go around.”

Alyssa couldn’t help but giggle. “Don’t worry about it.”

He cocked an eyebrow at her as the corner of his mouth quirked in amusement.

“I get it, Thomas.
