Chapter 21
Ruby Lee was not remotely helpful.
Mostly because she wasn't there.
She didn't answer the door of her very large, absolutely gorgeous, lakeside mansion.
Her car wasn't in the driveway, and we didn't see it when we looked in the windows of the three-car garage. I hadn't brought my lock picks, so we had to satisfy ourselves with walking around her massive house and peering in all the windows.
Not that I would have broken into her house, though. Hopefully.
Since I didn't bring my tools, it wasn't an issue, but I was a little afraid of what Hattie and Lucy might have been able to talk me into.
Ruby Lee had a lot of beautiful furniture, a massive fireplace, and original artwork, but we didn't see her. Granted, most of the house wasn't visible from the few windows we could see into, but I refused to let Hattie break into the garage and look for a ladder.
We did see a tent off to the right of her house in the woods, which made us decide not to hang around very long. Who wanted to be there when Hugo got his truck out of the ditch and came back?
None of us.
We made it out of Ruby Lee's without running into Hugo and headed back to town, going over everything we'd learned so far, but unable to fit the pieces together.
We were almost back to the marina when I noticed the sign for the Bass Derby police station as we hurtled past.
The light was on, and there was an SUV out front, the same one that Devlin had been driving when he'd scared the heck out of all of us at Rex's house.
I had a sudden idea. "Hattie. Turn around. I want to stop at the police station."
She immediately yanked the steering wheel to the left and whipped us into the parking lot, the tires screeching to a stop right in front of the door. "What's up?"
"Chief Stone's car isn't here. I want to run in and pay my fine so he doesn't arrest me."
She raised her brows. "Now?"
"He's not here. What better time?" I loved the idea of depriving Chief Stone of the chance to arrest me. "I'll just take a sec."
"Fine. Hurry up." Hattie put the truck in park.
I glanced at Lucy, who was watching the police station nervously. "Why don't you take Lucy home, and then come pick me up?"
Lucy frowned. "I'm fine to wait here."
"What if Chief Stone shows up?" It was one thing for him to arrest me for sign destruction. It was another to have him arrest Lucy for murder. I was really worried about what he might have found at her house.
Everyone who had seen any movie knew how easy it would be to plant evidence, especially since I was increasingly certain that Lucy had been intentionally set up as a suspect. I couldn't stop thinking about the fact Hugo had driven by only moments after Lucy's car had hit the sign.
I felt like this had to revolve around Hugo somehow.
