Just for good measure, Permelia decided to walk Fenton again on the way home from Wilma’s. His breed was very active, and she knew after having company all day, he’d be wound up. A walk would ensure he didn’t get into mischief while she attempted to spin the wool he’d “helped” with that morning.

“Can Fenton come see my tree fort?” Henrietta called from the tree in her front yard as they passed her house.

“If it’s not too high. He needs to stay on his leash.”

Fenton hadn’t waited for Permelia to decide if it was okay; he climbed up the trunk and onto the thick branch Henri was sitting on. He rubbed his head on her arm, arching his back.

“Are you teaching Wilma to knit?”

Permelia craned her neck to look up at the girl and her cat.

“What makes you ask that?”

“She had her curtains downstairs open, and from my fort, I can see into her sitting room.”

“You were spying on us?”

Henri’s face turned red.

“Not on purpose. I was looking around to see what I could see from up here, and there you were.”

“I am teaching Wilma to knit, but I’m sure she’d appreciate not being spied on.”

“If you’re not mad at me, I wanted to ask you if you could teach me to knit.”

“I would be happy to teach you, with two conditions.”

Henri sighed.

“What do I have to do?”

“First, you have to promise not to spy on Wilma anymore.”

The girl’s shoulders sagged.

“Who can I spy on? Having a tree fort isn’t fun if you can’t spy.”

“You can watch the street and sidewalk to see if anyone litters or if people let their dogs make messes in your yard. If they do, tell your parents.”

“Okay, I guess.”

“The second condition is that I need to meet your parents, and they have to tell me it’s okay for you to come to my place for knitting lessons.”

“That’s easy. They always want me to learn new activities that don’t involve a screen or earphones.”

“Are they home now?”

“Dad isn’t, but Mom is.”

“If you go get her, we can ask her now.”

Henri climbed down, followed by Fenton. She raced into her house and returned a few minutes later with her mother, whose name turned out to be Eleanor.

Once the two women had introduced themselves, Permelia related Henri’s request for knitting lessons.

“That would be very nice of you,” Eleanor answered. “I’m a painter, and I’ve a gallery show coming up, so I’m afraid I’ve not been very entertaining lately.”

“What sort of painting do you do?”

“This show is animal portraits. The gallery is donating a portion of the sales to a no-kill dog shelter.”

“That sounds wonderful. One of my daughters here in town is a sculptor.”

“What’s her name?”

“Katy O’Brien.”

“Small world—I know her. We’ve been at the same events several times.”

“I have all the materials Henri will need for knitting—I belong to a fiber cooperative. If you have something to write with, I’ll give you my phone number, and we can compare schedules and plan a time for her to start.
