It took an hour of messing with shit under the hood to get the stupid van to start. As a teen, Logan had learned a lot about old junkers because he drove several. That experience gave him just enough knowledge to get the thing running. Something told him he'd either have to coast the thing home or ditch it on the side of the road and use his thumb to get back to the city.
He found a trailhead that was more or less a weedy path that meandered up toward some hilly slopes. It was a nice winter day. They happened a lot in California. The draining heat of summer was far behind, and the chapping winds of fall had died out, too. Winter could be cold and rainy or clear and chilly like today. Logan had no doubt that they were at a high enough elevation for the occasional snowstorm, but not today. There was hardly a cloud in the sky.
On the way to the trail, a moment of fear grabbed him when he thought about Reggie out alone on a hiking trail. How could he watch her back if he had to hike an entirely different path? He assured himself that the cretins in Double Edged were not the hiking type. Chances were they only came out at night, like all the other ghouls and creeps.
The landscape, a mix of shrubs, oaks and the occasional pine, was fairly lush considering that the state had been choking on its own drought dust for years. The trail hadn't been kept up, and Logan had to watch for tree roots and loose rocks. The last thing he needed was a busted ankle. He had a fleeting vision of Reggie hiking along a trail, sipping on her water flask and moving as smoothly and gracefully as a deer through the wilderness. He, on the other hand, had come without water, and the omelet that seemed like a good idea at the time was sitting like a grease-covered rock in the pit of his stomach.
The trail was unkempt, but it was free of human-caused debris. It didn't lead to anything interesting like a pond or an old trapper's cabin, so it never made the rounds on social media. A few of Logan's favorite trails had been turned into natural Disneylands where you had to wait in line just to get into the parking area. Far too many people traipsing along to make it an enjoyable hike. He preferred the quiet ones, like this one. It was far more likely that Bosco and his ilk were hiding out far away from civilization.
Logan had done his fair share of off-roading on a dirt bike growing up. He didn't see anything that looked like tire tracks in the landscape. The trail itself was overgrown enough that tire tracks would be easy to spot. From what he could tell, the same path had hardly even seen a pair of hiking boots, let alone a tire.
He was calculating
