CHAPTER 7

The pet store is mostly free of humans when Dee and Charlie arrive. Charlie goes off in search of catnip, but Dee thinks Cornelius might also be tempted by some toys. She wanders to the back of the store in search of some fuzzy mice, but instead gets distracted by the live animals. When Charlie finds her again, Dee is crouching down, watching two cuddly gerbils nap together in their cage.

“Dee?” Charlie jiggles the catnip shaker in front of her face. “Earth to Dee? I found the catnip. Did you get the toys?”

Dee blinks. “Sorry. I got distracted.” She points at the snoozing gerbils. “Look how cute they are!”

Charlie wrinkles their nose. “I don’t really like rodents.”

Dee stands up. “I thought bats were rodents.”

“Excuse me.” Charlie crosses their arms. “I am not a regular bat. I’m a vampire bat. And I’m still getting the hang of it.”

“Sorry,” Dee says. “If it makes you feel any better, I’m not exactly an expert-level witch yet either.” She and Bella made more mistakes in one day than most witches did in their entire lives. Not to mention she was already behind on her classes given they spent so much time in Principal Koffin’s office today.

“You’ll get there,” Charlie says. “You can conjure flames and stop earthquakes. And it’s still only your first day of training.” They give her a pat on the back. “Come on, cat toys are in aisle two.”

Dee and Charlie walk to aisle two, where they discover a large wall of cat toys in a variety of shapes and sizes. Dee picks out a few fuzzy mice, plus a wand with a red ribbon. She eyes a Swiss-cheese plushy. “Do you think Cornelius would like one of these?”

“I think all the toys you’ve got in your hands should be plenty,” Charlie says. They lean in to get a better look at the block of cheese. “Wait, can you put catnip in there?”

Dee grabs the block of cheese and adds it to the top of her pile. “I can’t believe Bella doesn’t think this will work,” she scoffs. “She just likes her plan best because she’s the one who came up with it. She’s such a know-it-all.”

“I think your plan is great,” Charlie says. “Don’t worry about what Bella thinks.”

“Thank you,” Dee says. “I just don’t get why she always has to be the boss of everything.”

Charlie sighs, then wanders down the aisle, past the dog toys and the treats. Dee follows along, still talking.

“She’s been like this since we were little. She thinks that because she’s five minutes older, she’s always right.”

Charlie nods, saying nothing.

“It’s so annoying,” Dee continues. “Do you know what it’s like to grow up with a sister who always pushes you around? Who criticizes everything you do? Who borrows your underwear?”

Dee frowns. There’s a lot she can tolerate from Bella, but the underwear thing is just so ew.

Charlie and Dee linger at the end of the aisle, by the collars and leashes. Dee picks up
