Chapter 15

The next day was Monday, meaning that the bakery was closed for the day. I woke up late, enjoying the opportunity to sleep in, then went to the kitchen and fixed myself a bagel for breakfast while I got ready.

Scouring Amazon, I found a book that seemed to be a pretty good primer on Mayan art that also wasn’t eight thousand pages long, so I bought it and had it delivered to Shakes’s Kindle. I made a mental note to teach him how to sync the Kindle and then realized how insane it was that I was teaching my cat to use technology.

Having a familiar like Shakes was easily the strangest part of being a witch. A cat who could not only talk, but was also obsessed with reading? Truth was truly stranger than fiction.

When I was finished, I did a bit of administrative work before deciding to go down to The Steam Room for a hot chocolate and to grab a copy of The Spellford Cove Whisperer. After all, it was Monday, and I wanted to read the article written by Bianca Blatchford that was undoubtedly going to be unkind.

Ok, I didn’t want to read it. But I figured I probably should.

As soon as I reached the counter, Jennifer gave me a sympathetic look. “Have you read it yet?” She motioned with her head to the pile of papers beside her.

I grimaced and shook my head. “That bad, hey?”

“Well, it could have been worse,” Jennifer offered. “But, uh, it’s not great.”

“In that case, better make my hot chocolate a large size today,” I said with a nervous giggle.

“Will do,” Jennifer said. “By the way, thanks for the help the other day. I didn’t handle Pauline’s death really well.”

I waved away her thanks. “Don’t mention it. Anybody would be affected by having something like that happen right in front of their shop.”

“It’s kind of crazy,” Jennifer said to me, shaking her head. “I thought she’d just had a heart attack. And then it turns out she’s been murdered. I mean, ok, she wasn’t the nicest person ever, but murdering someone is next-level.”

“Yeah,” I agreed. “It is for sure. Do you know where Pauline was before she came to the coffee shop?”

Jennifer nodded slowly. “I do, actually, yeah. She mentioned it when she was ordering. She said she’d just come from the library. That was where she’d spent her morning.”

“Great, thanks.”

“Of course. I’ll bring the hot chocolate out to you when it’s ready. You should be sitting down when you read that.”

I groaned and thanked Jennifer as I headed for a somewhat isolated table in the corner of the room. I didn’t want anyone else around to see my reaction when I saw what Bianca had written about Queen of Tarts.

Obviously, the front page of the paper was about Pauline’s death. I skipped past it and went to page three, where the article about Queen of Tarts was prominently displayed.

“Outsider Takes Over Longtime Local’s Beloved Business.”

That headline wasn’t a great start.
