Dotty

Chapter 19

Dotty leaned over towards Sarah.

“I didn’t think you would tell me as much as you have because of rules about confidentiality.”

“I don’t work there anymore, and I wasn’t too impressed with the centre by the time I left. New management took over and their leadership style left a lot to be desired. They cut corners and ignored safeguarding concerns. There is no love lost between us. When I left, I was glad to get out and find another job with a more professional company. I’m happy to help you as I was always intrigued about Emma.”

“This story is fascinating. Would you like another coffee? I’m so grateful that you have taken the time to talk to me.”

“It’s my turn to buy. Let me get them.”

“No, please. You are doing me a huge favour by telling me about Emma. I’ve been fascinated to learn more from the time I found the note. Is it the same again?”

“Yes, please.” Dotty went up to the counter to order refills.

“Did you find out what Bob wanted to talk to you about?” Dotty asked when she returned with the drinks.

“Oh yes, but not from him.” Sarah sat back and crossed her legs.

“I’m all ears.”

“It was two weeks later when Emma came to see me. She looked troubled. There had been some whispers. There always is in a place like a rehab centre. It is hard to keep anything quiet and everyone’s behaviours are magnified. It is like being observed under a microscope and not just for the clients, for the staff as well. Things get passed up though. How the clients get away with stuff, I’ll never know but they have spent a long time in addiction being devious and cunning. I hoped Emma had learnt her mistake with Willie, but I was having reservations about her.”

“What happened next?”

“Emma came to me and said she had something confidential that she needed to get off her chest for my ears only. I warned her it may depend on what she said because we have responsibilities under safeguarding. I sometimes wonder if she was on a death wish back then.”

“Why? What did she tell you?”

“She told me she was sleeping with Bob. I didn’t go straight to management though. I told her that if she ended it no more would be said. It was probably a mistake on my part, but I liked her and wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. I was blaming the men, but Emma wasn’t the sort of person you could trust. If I had gone to Bob, he may have denied it, so I kept an eye on them. I was annoyed with Bob, especially after what happened with Willie. If it was true, I couldn’t believe he could be so foolish. I had been accused of being jealous of her which wasn’t the case. I didn’t give a monkey’s about what she got up to but there was the moral ethics of the situation and the other clients to consider.
