Chapter 20
The three friends met up at the Strawberry tea rooms on Saturday. All three chose the soup this week. Dotty picked a bowl of her favourite home-made French onion soup.
“Mm, this is delicious.” Dotty closed her eyes as she savoured the depth of flavour of the onions mixed in with cheese.
“I could eat that again,” Kylie said as she scraped the last spoonful from her bowl. “Anyone for pud?”
“No, thanks.” Rachel was good and could resist temptation. With Dotty, the slightest suggestion of food got her culinary juices longing to taste something.
“I’ll have a chocolate chip cookie to go with my coffee. I wouldn’t like to see you eating alone, Kylie. Dotty licked her lips and salivated at the thought. I don’t know how I’m going to get into my little black dress over the party season though.”
“I wouldn’t worry about putting on weight, Dotty. Fat people are harder to kidnap.” Kylie had well and truly put her size nines in it this time.
“Kylie, that comment is so out of order after what happened to Dotty recently. Apologise now.” Rachel folded her arms in disgust at her friend. Dotty scowled.
“She knows I don’t mean it, don’t you Dotty?” When Dotty didn’t speak, Kylie smiled. “Have they caught anyone yet for your attempted abduction?”
“No, I don’t think so.” Dotty’s mouth turned down at the edge.
“You know I was only joking, don’t you?” Kylie touched Dotty’s arm. Dotty didn’t reply. Rachel stepped in.
“Sometimes you go too far with your so-called jokes. They’re not funny when they’re attacking someone.” Rachel’s eyes narrowed.
“Oh, look at you, Miss Perfect.” Kylie wobbled her head and pulled a face as she spoke.
“Stop bickering you two.” Dotty hissed. The couple at the next table turned to see what the argument was about.
A cloud of gloom lowered over the table where the girls sat. Stella, the waitress disturbed their silence by clearing the plates away. After she left, Kylie spoke.
“Anyway, I’ve got some news, if anyone’s interested.”
“What’s that then?”
“Crazy Chris from Crawley is doing a gig in Horsham next week. I’ve seen posters for it if anyone fancies going?”
“I tried to phone him, but he never returned my call.” Dotty sighed.
“I think we all should go if we’re available. We’re overdue a night out.” Rachel never stayed sore for long.
“It’s alright for you two. I’ve no money.” Dotty looked despondent.
“Have you not sold any pans yet?” Kylie asked.
“One or two. Why don’t you both buy your mum one for Christmas?”
“I don’t think mine would be happy with a pan but if it’ll help you out, I’ll take a couple off you.” Rachel nodded.
“Really? That’s very sweet, Rachel. How about you, Kylie?”
“I suppose so. You could always ask them here. I mean from what you’ve told us they’re good quality pans, aren’t they?”
“Yeah, you’re right, I’ll ask.” By the time Dotty left, she had grabbed six sales so could afford to go on the night out. Maybe things were looking up.
She had promised her dad she would help sort things out for his leaving do so that was the latest thing keeping her mind occupied.
