"She didn't say that," Silfia said.

"I may have embellished a little at the end."

"And then you fell into each other's arms and kissed?"

"No, because Rodger ran up the stairs to ask if we were okay, and she quickly threw her dress on because she didn't want him to see her like that because he fancied her."

"You did not wish to hurt your friend?"

"Well, at that point, I couldn't wait any longer. Luckily he had only a few weeks left, so I just thought it best to suck it up until he was gone."

"You waited too long."

I nodded. "I'm not even sure she'll be waiting for me. I can hardly say I've been waiting for her. You know how it is. That city below is…what even is it anymore? This is my life now."

"You care for her no longer?"

"Do you care for your parents no longer?"

"I love them!" she said so quickly that I felt warm from its truth. "They are my light, glimmering through the trees. They are my stars, in Elsara's lush green fields. They are my…" She paused and then did not finish, but her smile was so warm and comforting that I couldn't help but smile back.

Silfia and I stared out into the city in comfortable silence. Windows glowed orange with flickering candle lights. Horse-drawn carts clopped down the streets. Across some of the roofs, little pigeon posts were manned by slayers. I was amazed I could see them from here.

Silfia pulled her chair beside me, taking me out of my blissful thoughts.

"For a moment," I said, "I forgot all about Lady Melrose attacking Evie, our feud, and everything else. It was nice."

"Feud," Silfia scoffed.

"You don't really hate me, do you?" I asked.

She punched my arm, and it hurt.

"Stop that!" I said.

She had a mean hook for someone so slender.

"You defended me against Joala's cruelty, even after what I said to you moments prior, and then I reward you by telling you I hate you." Her glimmering pale-blue eyes regarded me, and it felt really nice to have her look at me like that. There was no malice behind it, just…looking at me.

"I wasn't after a reward," I said. "It was just something that had to be said. She wanted me to join in on the cruelty, and I wouldn't do that, regardless of what you'd said to me. I'm not like that. And did you mean what you said?"

She coughed and sat up straighter, looking at the city. Clearly, I had taken her off guard.

"At the time? Yes. I did not want your help. But what I said at our detention? Hate is such a strong word to throw around—cutting, in the absence of the blade I hated not to have with me."

"I'm honestly not sure what you mean by that. Can you speak a bit plainer?"

"Plainly," she said, pushing her chair just slightly closer. "Plainly, I would like a glass of wine. Red."

I nodded. My lips were suddenly dry, and licking them made them dryer.

Silfia crossed her leg and rested her hand on her knee, looking out at the city.
