There was a flurry of activity around me again. In the run-up to wedding week, which we were all counting on to pull the magazine through, it was all hands on deck.

We had Logan locked in, which was our massive reader magnet for the issue, but he was just one person and we needed more than that to put on an entire show. As the editor, it fell on me to audition and hire other models as well.

It wasn’t something I did often, so I’d enlisted Connie’s help. She sat next to me in the boardroom where we had portfolios and headshots scattered all over the table in front of us. We were auditioning male and female models, watching them walk, going over the paperwork either they or their agents had submitted, and trying to decide who would be the best fit.

While it had been a busy morning, it had also been a rewarding one. We dug through the mountains of pictures and portfolios and talked to and auditioned every person, and we kept getting one step closer to a successful show and hopefully a hit issue.

My hair had been in a ponytail, but it was now in a bun being held up by a pencil. Connie’s immaculately applied makeup was all but gone and we were going to be exhausted by tonight, but we were both smiling.

“I’m not sure about him, but he’s a definite maybe to me,” she said after a young guy we’d just gotten done with left the room.

Glancing down at his portfolio, she picked up a green marker—her assigned color for the day—and put a big “M” on it. “He’s pretty enough, but there isn’t anything about him that has that oomph we’re looking for to really attract the readers.”

When she handed me the portfolio, I added it to the growing pile of maybes. We had a ton of nos, but only a couple of absolute yeses so far. As things stood at the moment, Logan would be joined by one other man and one woman, but we needed to add quite a few to that number.

“Who’s next?” Connie asked, peering down at the printed list we had between us on the table. “Oooo. Nikki Latrell. Have you heard of her?”

I narrowed my eyes in thought, but there were only vague bells going off in the back of my mind. “Maybe. I’ve definitely heard the name. What do you know about her?”

“She’s got some juice at the moment. I’m surprised she’s auditioning, actually. As far as I know, she’s high fashion and she’s pretty booked up. I think we tried to get her for a campaign a few months ago for Grind.”

“Everyone wants to be a part of wedding week,” I reasoned. “It’s the biggest thing happening in the world of fashion during those few days, so maybe she’s just trying to get in on the action.”

She rocked her head as she considered what I’d said, then inclined it in agreement. “It’s got to be that.
