CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Miriam made her way along the busy downtown street, feeling like all eyes were on her. It was unusual for this many people to be out in Pelican Beach outside of tourist season, but the streets were swarmed as the sky darkened. She kept moving, kept her head down.
If fate wanted her to die, then she would have to accept it. But the human side of her could not help but feel the paranoia, the fear of the unknown. Where do we go when it all ends?
She went to cross the street--just as a car whipped by her, honking. Miriam jumped back, her heart pounding in her throat. After calming herself, she breathed deeply, trying to figure out what her next direction would be.
Ahead of her, the bookstore stood, looking a little more empty than usual. Miriam looked around. The crowd seemed to be dissipating a little bit. She was about to make a beeline for the store when she spotted a man talking to one of the store clerks. For a moment, she swore he was looking right at her--but when she caught his eyes, he looked away.
Did I imagine it?
Miriam went to cross the street again, but three cars whipped by her, sending her into darting motions, almost like a game of leapfrog. Miriam felt dizzy, confused.
Her breathing was rapid, her heart pounding. Get out of the street, she told herself, trying to just find a way around it.
She made it to the other side, dodging cars, pedestrians, everything in her way. She finally made her way to the bookstore, pushing her way through the door.
Pearson was there behind the counter, talking to a tall, dark-haired man. She felt her heart start to beat slower, her breaths less rapid. She took a moment, composed herself, and then made her way over to the counter.
"Hey, Mim," Pearson said, looking up at her. He shot a look at the man. "How are you?"
"I'm fine," she said. She smiled at him. "Just... looking for a book."
"Well, let me know if you need me."
"Sure," she said, turning to the other man, the customer. He smiled at her.
"I remember you," he said. "You're that fortune teller across the street, right?"
"Y-yes," she said, looking at his face. "I'm sorry, what did you say your name was?"
"I'm sorry," he said, looking confused. "I didn't say. I'm Sean. Sean Reynolds."
"Nice to meet you, Sean," she said, her body relaxing a little. She smiled, feeling herself slip into her friendly, helpful self. "Did I do a reading with you before? Apologies if I forgot." It was unusual for Miriam to forget a face, but she was feeling so scattered, so confused. Ever since she'd had the premonition of her own death, she'd been on edge. Part of her wondered if she should call Taylor Sage for help. But she couldn't do that.
Fate wants me to die... then I must.
The man held out a hand. "It's alright," he said. "You're right. I did a reading with you once.
