CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Back at the hotel room, Taylor sat across from Wesley with her laptop out, trying not to think about how just a few hours ago, sheâd been on that bed with him, trapped in his arms. Instead, she focused on the screen in front of her as she typed out what she thought might become a good profile for the killer.
âOkay, so,â Taylor said. âWe know he has a porcelain doll.â
âRight,â Wesley said. âWhich is beyond creepy, might I add.â
âI know.â Taylor nodded. âBut it could be significant. His attachment to the doll could definitely tell us something about who he is. It could tell us that heâs still attached to his childhood.â
Wesley nodded. âI think youâre right. The doll could be a key piece of information in this case.â
âItâs possible,â Taylor said, typing away on her laptop. âIn fact, I think itâs something we should focus on.â
She glanced up at Wesley and saw the interest in his eyes. âWhat do you think?â
âI agree,â Wesley said immediately. âIf we can find out what the doll means to the killer, we might be able to find out more about his motives.â
Taylor nodded and resumed typing, thinking hard about what they could do next. It was definitely an interesting angle to explore, and she was optimistic that they would find something useful in regards to the doll.
But there was something else about Isabelâs report that stood out to Taylor. And that was the âchildâs voice.â
Surely, the man they were after wasnât a child at all. He must have been doing some sort of vocal trick, something to make it sound like he was young. Heâd lure the girls in with the voice, make them think a child was in danger, then theyâd see the doll and become confused⦠and then heâd strike.
Taylor shivered just thinking about the type of man who would do something like this.
âTo bend his voice like that,â Taylor said, âmaybe heâs a voice actor or something like that.â
âYeah, itâs crazy the way some people can alter their voices,â Wesley said. âI hear it all the time on Maisieâs cartoons when sheâs watching them at home. Most of the voice actors on TV are grown adults. They just have a weird talent.â
Taylor nodded. âMaybe the killer has it too.â
She thought back to the doll, and the creepy image she had of it in her head. Maybe it was too simplistic to think it was just a voice actor. Taylor couldnât just think about each clue individually; she had to think about them together. How they worked together.
âWhat if,â she said, âthe doll and the voice are connected?â
âHow do you mean?â Wesley asked.
âI mean⦠maybe the killer isnât just some voice actor. Maybe heâs a ventriloquist.â
âA ventriloquist?â Wesley leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms.
âYes,â Taylor said. âMaybe he uses the doll in his act, then uses it to do the voice on the other women.â
âPossible,â Wesley said. âSo we should look into ventriloquists in town. I doubt thereâs many of them; itâs sort of a dying art.
