3. The Magna Carta, or Great Charter, approved in June 1215 near London. In it, the king granted rights to the English aristocracy. While ordinary people gained little from it, the Magna Carta became a model for democratic government and individual rights.

4. Virginia, which passed the Virginia Declaration of Rights in June 1776. It is considered the first declaration of human rights in modern times and influenced Thomas Jefferson when he wrote the Declaration of Independence a few months later.
