When we are externally motivated, coerced by reward and punishment, we lose touch with why we might hate to do something. We lose touch with our own needs. We are all like rats in a Skinner box experiment. We have our learned behavior—pulling the lever to get the positive reinforcement—which include acts like being cooperative, pleasing our boss, or taking care of our spouse. But we lost connection with our instincts to forage for food, to nest, and other activities that would nourish our whole being.
