Chapter Eleven
âDo you want to talk about it?â Caleb asked, sometime past dawn when she was lying against him, her head resting on his chest.
âTalk about what?â Faith asked, brain thoroughly melted by excellent orgasms and lack of sleep. Sheâd been half-dozing, lulled by the sound of the ocean drifting through the window and the steady thump of Calebâs heartbeat beneath her ear.
âWhatever it was that brought you to my doorstep wanting vodka and, well, this.â
Her pleasant fog started to disperse a little. Dislike. She didnât want to think about reality. âAre you complaining?â
He chuckled, the noise vibrating through the side of her head. âDo I look like Iâm complaining?â
She twisted onto her stomach, so she could prop herself up to study him. Lounging against the pillows, sleepy eyed and satisfied, she couldnât say that he looked upset about how the night had turned out.
âNo,â she said. âWhich is just as well,â she added, with a smile. âI put a lot of effort into last night.â
âI remember. I appreciate it.â One of his hands skimmed over her shoulder, his thumb moving slowly to the topmost point of her tattoos. âI like these.â His hand moved lower. âAll these little musical notes floating down your back. And the other ones.â
She shivered despite herself, remembering how heâd used his mouth on every part of her marked by ink, then batted the memory away. Heâd done some marking of his own. She was pleasurably sore in quite a few places. âYou cannot possibly be ready for roundâ¦â She paused. âOkay, Iâve lost track. But more than you can possibly be ready for.â Indeed she was feeling the effects of hours wrapped around Caleb. Muscles were not the only part of her feeling slightly tender this morning.
âYou know, some men would take that as a challenge.â
âOh god, donât tell me Iâve awakened your competitive spirit.â
âNope. Youâve worn me out. For now. But that doesnât mean I donât like touching you still.â
She ignored the âfor nowâ part. That implied there was going to be another night. She hadnât yet decided if she was ready for that. The night had been hot and wild, yes. Caleb knew exactly what he was doing with every inch of his body. But somewhere in the early hours, somehow, each time theyâd reached for each other again, hot and wild had turned a little more ⦠something else. Something slower. Something more ⦠intense. Intense meant emotion. Something she didnât want to get caught up in.
This was a festival fling.
Sheâd thought sheâd been clear enough but now she wanted to make sure Caleb wasnât going to get the wrong idea. Awkward.
âAre you ignoring my question on purpose?â Caleb asked.
Dammit. The man had a mind like a steel trap. Sheâd gone off on a lust-fogged, sleep-deprived tangent and he was still on target, sitting there waiting for the answer to whatever heâd asked her to begin with. What was that again? Something about talking about why sheâd turned up on his doorstep.
