Chapter Fourteen

‘So quiet,’ said Arulos as he looked down across the Great Excelsis Road.

He had led the Anvilhearts in a sprint across the valley then climbed the opposite slope, hoping to gain a better view of the surrounding lands, but the weather had conspired against them. The landscape was bathed in low, rolling mists that deadened sounds and made it impossible to see far with any clarity. Arulos could just make out the statues that lined the Great Excelsis Road, but they were disembodied body parts, adrift in a sea of murk. There was still no sign of the Knights Excelsior. Or anything else, for that matter. Like the valley behind them, the marshlands bordering the road were oddly peaceful. Rather than calm, however, the mist radiated a sense of foreboding, as though biding its time, waiting to reveal something dreadful.

‘That fog could be hiding anything,’ said Varek, planting his standard in the ground. Steam belched from the mud, coiling around his staff and releasing a brackish stink.

Arulos gave a vague nod as the rest of the Anvilhearts reached the top of the ridge and took in the dreary view. ‘Where are the Knights Excelsior?’ he said. ‘We have to keep marching. We have to reach the coast.’ He looked south, recalling his vision of a dome blazing in the heat of battle, the moment of his glory. ‘We can’t wait here.’

Varek removed his helmet to massage his temples, revealing a stern, weathered face with heavy brows and a short, black beard. The fog did not reach down into the valley and, behind him, the tor was lit up like a beacon as Kolgrimm’s engines blazed. Varek stared at the distant statues that marked the route of the road.

‘We need not skulk through the shadows any more. Once we have taken our leave of the mortals we can march straight across that road and head to the coast.’ He raised his standard a little higher, letting the moonlight play across the metal. ‘We can march to Delium in a manner that is more befitting of the Anvilhearts’ proud history.’

Arulos was looking back down towards the tor. ‘We cannot leave them yet. The Knights Excelsior are not here. And if the crusaders are not under the aegis of a Stormhost, they have no chance of building that fortress. Tapping into the aether streams is just the beginning. It will take them months to build something that can withstand sustained attacks.’

Varek shook his head. ‘Our orders are clear, Arulos. We must not be delayed any further. The siege at Delium has to be lifted. Saint Yndrasta herself has sent out the call. We must move on and trust that the Knights Excelsior will arrive soon.’

‘Varek, I understand. I know how it galls you to think of others striking the blow that is rightfully ours to land, but–’

‘You think I am vainglorious? You think I am glory hunting?’

‘No. You are proud of the Anvilhearts and you know that we could turn the tide of that battle.
