As soon as I walked through the door to Dot’s place, she spun her chair around to look at me. “Rosie is on her way. Ready to kick some butt?”

“Always. What have you found out?”

“I’ll wait until Rosie gets here to give you the full run-through, but the unfortunate summary is that whoever is doing this is covering their tracks pretty well.”

I raised my eyebrows. “If they can stump you of all people, they must be good.”

“I know,” Dot muttered, her eyes moving back to her screen.

I could just make out the curves of annoyance in the corner of her mouth.

A second later, there came a knock at the door, and I opened it to allow Rosie to enter.

“Good morning, Charlie. How did your undercover operation go last night?”

“I think Will has a pretty solid motive, and the opportunity. One of the other workers overheard a fight between him and Rob last week. Rob wanted a bigger cut of the profits, and Will threatened him over it. This one might end up being pretty cut and dried, and I’ll just have to prove it.”

“Those are famous last words,” Rosie replied.

“All right, now that you’re both here, I can unfortunately announce that for once, I’ve gotten nowhere,” Dot said, turning around and clapping her hands. “Well, not nowhere. But I wasn’t able to track the owner of the phone down to a specific location, which was what I’d hoped for.”

Rosie motioned for Dot to continue, and she did.

“I started off by looking into the number that Barb has been texting. It turns out it’s fully been spoofed. The real owner is a Michael Anders, who does live in Phoenix, but isn’t likely to be our guy. He’s eighty-four years old, retired, lives in a home, and as far as I can tell, he has made four phone calls in the past month, and never texts. Just calls his kid once a week.”

“Aww, that’s nice,” I said.

“It is, but it doesn’t help us. I did a little bit more digging and was able to figure out the number spoofing his is foreign. It’s registered in Malaysia, and I was able to track down the registration details, but it’s a dead end. It links to an abandoned apartment that belongs to the bank. I also tried to track its use with triangulation data, but it was no use. I think they’re using a VPN, and without any sort of information about what one it could be, I’m not able to track it.”

“So we’re stuck,” I said, biting the corner of my lip. “We need to draw this person out, somehow.”

“That shouldn’t be too difficult if they’re on the island,” Rosie said.

“You and I have different definitions of the term ‘difficult,’” I replied. “We don’t have a single clue who this person is besides the fact that they use a Malaysian phone number to hide their identity while they’re scamming people.”

Rosie smiled. “Oh, but that part is simple. After all, what does a scammer want more than anything?”

“Money,” I said simply.
