Emily stared at Blake in horror from across the kitchen table, barely feeling Paul’s arm around her.
“You can’t be serious?” she eventually managed.
“I’m so sorry,” Blake said. To his credit, Emily thought he looked absolutely devastated. “We’re currently investigating how this could have happened. He was secure in the cell. Nobody could have got to him.”
“Except Alice?” Emily said hotly. “That doll has killed my brother. First, she kills my grandmother, then she cuts my brother’s throat? Is that what you’re telling me?”
“I think that’s what somebody wants us to believe,” Blake said slowly. “Naturally, we called for an ambulance the second we found him, but he was already dead by the time we’d opened that cell door.”
Emily shook her head in disbelief. She was too shocked and numb to even think about crying. Now, she really was on her own. Not even the occasional sad thought about having a brother in prison could be grasped onto now.
“Now do you believe me?” she said to Paul. “That doll is dangerous. It has been ever since I was a child, probably before then. Where is she now?”
“The doll is now in a secure place at our forensic lab. She isn’t going anywhere,” Blake replied. “It’s not Alice we need to be worrying about now though, Emily. Somebody is behind all this. Someone who wants you to believe this childhood nightmare for their own gain.”
“All the way from when I was small?” Emily asked sharply. “Why? Why would anyone do that? I told you about what happened to me because you said you’d believe me. Can’t you see? Alice has been working her evil on my family for years. She walked across me, had me pinned to the bed by some kind of dark force! God only knows what she would have done to me if I hadn’t managed to scream, but now she’s killing people!”
Blake leaned forwards and clasped his hands together. “I know, Emily. I know how scary this whole thing must be for you, and I can only imagine what must be going through your head at this moment, but we need to apply some form of logic onto what’s happening. I want you to look at something for me. Just humour me.”
He opened his coat pocket and pulled out an A4 sized piece of paper which he placed on the table and spread out in front of her, his hand over the top of it. It was an advert that had clearly been printed off the internet advertising a doll that could be purchased for just twenty pounds. It was wearing a long white dress and was smiling innocently, long blonde hair completing the angelic appearance.
Emily shrugged. “Okay? It’s a doll. That isn’t Alice.”
“I know,” Blake said. “but just imagine for a second that you didn’t know that it wasn’t. And that it was wearing the same sort of dress, had its hair the same. At a glance, just by the face, would you really know?”
Emily looked hard at the picture.
