Finally, the doctor called Bill to come in. Corporal Johnson and others waiting anxiously came along too.

Bill’s heart was in his throat. Questions raced through his mind: Is she all right? Will she survive? He had said more prayers in the last hour than any other time in his life.

Trixie smells him. Bill is coming! She manages a whimper, just to let him know she made it.

Bill heard the sound. Instantly his eyes filled with tears that ran down his cheeks in little rivulets. He had to blink to see.

“She’s going to be fine,” said the doctor.

“Thank you, Doc,” said Bill, bending down to kiss the little terrier on the head, noting her bandaged leg.

“You’re going to be fine, Trixie. Did you hear the doctor? You’ll be back on duty in no time.” He ran his fingers through the fur on her forehead.

When Bill picks Trixie up, she gets that warm feeling. Knowing she is loved.
