CHAPTER EIGHT

Charles & Calvin

being.

Imet Helen through her dog Charles. He was a wise and loving Golden Retriever who somehow reminded me of a warm-hearted Englishman sitting quietly in a cozy den offering kindness and wisdom to those who came to visit, including me! I have actually not met Charles or Helen in person, but Helen has called on me from time to time over the years to talk with Charles about his health and to look in on how to make him most comfortable. Charles had malignant tumors in his nasal cavity that were a great concern for Helen. Despite these challenges, Charles carried on for years until finally it was time to say goodbye. As usual, he gave wise counsel to Helen during his transition of death. Charles’s main concern was for Helen. He wanted her to continue on and to find another companion to share her life with. Charles expressed joy in his readiness to make his way to what he called “home”. He explained the delight he felt when he thought of being able to fully express his wise and loving spirit without the growing limitations of his beloved physical body. He explained that his body was no longer a clear vessel that allowed his spirit to purely shine forth. He had some wear and scratches that were precious mementos of his journeys and adventures, fond memories of where he had been, what he had learned and most important to him were the playful moments with his traveling companions. He was ready to feel the fullness of his pure spirit and carry with him in his heart forever all those he loved and all he had learned. Charles reminded me to tell Helen that in truth, he was not going anywhere. He would always be at her side — she would not be alone.

Charles gave specific guidance on what he wanted with regard to his transition from his body to pure spirit. He asked to be helped along with euthanasia. His physical body, or what he termed his “vessel”, was failing in ways that made it uncomfortable for him to continue. He explained that some of his organs were fine and would keep him going while others were in decline. He could go on, he said, but he would suffer and not be able to carry on in the way he wished to live. So, he asked for Helen’s help. He explained when and how he would like to go, and what he wanted her to do with his remains. He requested going into the veterinary clinic he had known for years. He really enjoyed seeing his doctor and the loving staff that kept the clinic warm and inviting for him. For Charles, his visits to the doctor were like social events. The way he described it reminded me of going out for coffee on a daily basis, seeing his old friends. The doctor also admired and respected Charles.

Charles wanted Helen to understand that he could and would wait for her to feel more ready for his transition.
