• Be flexible in procedure when the temperature changes or the sun heats up. Also, be willing to change your method in running a group of Salukis, or Malamutes, or Maltese around.
• In examining the mouths of Toy breeds, gently cup the head and lift the lips with your thumbs. The Pug’s bite can be felt by running your thumb over the teeth.
• When counting teeth, learn to count them in groups: 3-4-1-2 (each side of the upper jaw); 3-4-1-3 (each side of the lower jaw), totaling 42. With a few breeds, it’s easiest to look at bite, sides, and then say “Open” to see the rest.
• Breeds, like hemlines, go up and down. Some years several Goosendorf Hounds are worthy of BIS. Other years, the breed is lacking in quality.
• If there are holes in the Standard, talk to your mentor. Study the Illustrated Standard if there is one or the AKC video. These often fill in holes.
• Remember to look for certain faults or drags of the breed which are becoming widespread: short upper arms, long hocks, low on leg, and upright shoulders. Sometimes we have few choices, but when possible, avoid rewarding universal problems.
• When studying new breeds, remember breed specific qualities. I will never forget being told that Portuguese Water Dogs should have buns of steel. That terrific muscle tone gives them the push to dive into the water.
• Does the dog look like, act like, and move like the breed? That’s type.
• Even in breeds that do not prioritize head qualities, the head often defines the breed.
• Nothing looks just like an Old English Sheepdog, not even his “kissing cousins,” the Beardie, or the Polish Lowland Sheepdogs.
• If you have a large entry, relax, and enjoy. They’re easier than small entries!
• If in doubt, remember function.
• Reward a quality that’s difficult to achieve in the breed.
• If they’re built right, they should move right.
• You’ll never find a dog with all ideal characteristics. Searching for it is what is fun. And when it comes close, oh, how your heart zings!
