When two dogs greet each other, they start by carefully sniffing at each others’ muzzles and then go on to sniff each other’s genitals. After this first approach they can then go on to play if they are more or less equal in age and rank, or they will display their respective rank to each other.

AGGRESSION, FEAR, RITUALS, FRIENDLINESS, PEOPLE AND DOGS.

Grooming

Grooming behaviour is related to hygiene. However, the dog’s grooming behaviour is not highly developed. Originally, grooming was probably not necessary, since the dog’s ancestor, the wolf, has a self-cleaning coat which does not need special care. It moults during summer and grows during winter. The wolf’s coat protects it against heat and cold and acts as a buffer against strong wind and rain. If the animal is healthy, its coat is not a source of problems.
