Tobias answered his phone before the first ring even ended. He seemed on edge.

“What’s wrong?” he asked.

Instead of trying to explain what she saw, she took a picture and sent it to him.

“Check your phone,” she told him.

There was a brief pause, and then Tobias said, “I’m on my way.”

A few minutes later, this car came speeding up the road and turned sharply into her driveway. He hopped out and practically ran to the porch.

“Are you okay?” he asked, searching her face for any sign that she was hurt or afraid.

She nodded and replied, “I’m good. I’m just annoyed. Whoever keeps doing this is really starting to tick me off.”

“I understand that, and I understand how you feel about all of this. You’ve heard this before, but you really need to be careful. This investigation is even more dangerous than the last two,” Tobias cautioned.

“What do you mean?” Dana asked.

“Almost every single person involved in this investigation is also involved in the drug scene. Drugs make people do crazy and unpredictable things. They make people do things that they never would have done when they are sober,” Tobias told her.

“They also aren’t as careful, Dana said.

Then, after seeing the look on Tobias’s face, she said, “I promise that I will be very careful and not let my guard down.”

“I would feel a lot better if you would promise to always stay in the company of other people and not break into anybody’s house,” Tobias told her. “Speaking of that, destroying all of those police cars is a felony.”

“I never touched a single one of those cars. There’s absolutely no proof that I had anything to do with the destruction of those cars. There are no fingerprints and no one saw me anywhere near them,” she protested.

Tobias growled at her, took the evidence, and left.

“You guys seem to have a love-hate relationship,” Gracie observed.

“He doesn’t seem to know whether he wants to kiss me or kill me, does he?” Dana asked.

Popo said that he was going to head out to the wooded area and meet with some of the other familiars.

He hadn’t come back by the time Dana had showered and gone to bed. She worried about him, but she knew that he would contact her if he needed to.

Dana had no reason to worry. He woke her up with a wet kiss across her face about two in the morning. Dana was immediately awake because she knew that he would not have woken her up unless it was very important.

“What’s the matter?” Dinner asked him.

“The second mask has been found. Lily was found under a bunch of brush near the cave where you had rescued a girl. Her familiar hadn’t heard from her in a couple of days, so we went looking for her last night. The mask was attached to her face just like it was to the mortals,” Popo reported.

“I wonder why she was out there,” Dana mused. “Was she lured out there? She would have trusted Cindy and would have gone out there with her.
