12 – Kira

“Somebody looks like the kitten that hogged the whole bowl of cream.” Kira looked up from her coffee mug and grinned at Adam. He was staring at her with narrowed eyes. “I’ve never seen that look. Let me see. What could put that kind of glow on your face?”

Adam’s face lit up. “Oh, girl! You finally got that hunk of bad boy in your bed again, didn’t you?”

“Well, since you seem to already know the answer to that, I don’t have to say anything,” Kira smirked. “Besides, I don’t want you to use details to embarrass Dirk when you are at our house tomorrow for our celebratory cookout.”

“Really? Are you having a big family barbecue?” Adam was stuffing his messenger bag and car keys in his locker.

“Yes, and it was Dirk’s idea. Adam, I never thought I could be so happy. This is everything I ever dreamed of and more. Since today is my short shift, Dirk and I are going to tell Henry he’s Dirk’s son. Then this weekend, we’re going to have a party with a big cake and everything.”

Adam pulled her in for a hug. “It’s about time you found all the happiness you’ve been pining for.”

“Pining for? Oh my God. I’ve not been pining for anything.” Kira stepped back from Adam and tried to look like she meant the words she said. She had pined. She had totally pined.

“Uh huh. Keep telling yourself that. You said before that your therapist thinks of Dirk as one of his very best friends.” The big man smirked when Kira punched him in the arm.

“I never said those exact words. Keep that up and I won’t tell you that the cookout starts Saturday at two.” She and Adam walked from the lounge to the nurse’s station to pick up their tablets.

“Sugar, we both know you’d cry a river if we didn’t show up. We wouldn’t miss it! Do you need me to bring anything?” Adam smiled as he scanned the notes on his tablet.

“Nope. Just you and Sean. Someone with the Daggers is arranging the food and some of the guys on Dirk’s construction company are bringing over some tables.” Kira’s face hurt from smiling so much.

“You’re that confident that my baby boo is going to be happy about Dirk Hodges being his father?”

“No doubts whatsoever.”
