THE ORDEALS OF DEMETER TV Comic Issues 720 - 723 (2.10.65 - 23.10.65) Pages: 8 & 9 (Colour) Writer: Unknown Artist: Bill Mevin The TARDIS lands on the planet Demeter where the travellers are is taken to be an invasion force from neighbouring planet, Bellus. Shortly after the misunderstanding is cleared up the real attack from Bellus takes place, with vibrations shaking Demeter, causing mass destruction. With its transfer to pages 8 and 9 of 7V Comic the Doctor Who strip gained not only the benefits of colour but the talents of a new artist, Bill Mevin. Mevinâs style of art is obviously more suited to Doctor Who. In particular his likeness of William Hartnellâs Doctor is a far more accurate rendition than Neville Mainâs. ENTER: THE GO-RAY TV Comic Issues 724 - 727 (30.10.65 - 20.11.65) Pages: 8 & 9 (Colour) Writer: Unknown Artist: Bill Mevin The Doctor, John and Gillian land on the planet Go-Ray where the entire planet is powered by Cardium. As the Doctor and his grandchildren approach the Cardium HQ and explosion takes place causing the power supply to fail. The travellers are blamed by the strange, wheeled Go-Rays who imprison them. The Go-Rays who whizz around on their single wheel are quite amusing, particularly the police Go-Ray who wear domed helmets almost identical to the traditional British The explosion of the Cardium HQ is never actually explained and would therefore appear to be the writerâs rather clumsy method of involving the lead characters in the story. SHARK BAIT TV Comic Issues 728 - 731 (27.11.65 - 18.12.65) 30 SHARK BAIT TV Comie Issues 728 - 731 (27.11.65 - 18.12.65) Pages: 8 & 9 (Colour) Writer: Unknown Artist: Bill Mevin Landing on a planet, the TARDIS is drawn through quicksand by a race of small frog people and used as bate in a trap for a shark. The Doctor, John and Gillian help the frog people but lose the TARDIS once again, this time along with Gillian. It is up to John and the Doctor to rescue her and escape from the realm of the Ancient Mariner. This story is typical of the period. It has no real plot as such, being just a series of individual encounters building to a climax. The writer seems unable to sustain his simplistic ideas for four episodes and so resorts to âtacking-onâ a second storyline involving the Ancient Mariner. This pattern would be repeated in several other adventures in the near future. The Doctorâs bag is introduced in this adventure. A handy little plot device that the Doctor would carry with him on several adventures. From this bag, the Doctor would produce a wide variety of items that would conveniently spring the travellers from whatever peril they were currently facing. In this particularly story, the bag contains three pairs of frogmanâs flippers which is particularly odd as the Doctor had no idea that they would be going anywhere near water when he and his companions left the TARDIS.
